Punxsutawney Phil on Groundhog Day 2025

After 364 days of preparation, Punxsutawney Phil's big day arrived on Feb. 2, Groundhog Day. The furry prognosticator came out of his stump at Gobbler's Knob at 7:15 a.m. local time and predicted six more weeks of winter.

Phil takes this annual pronouncement seriously. According to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club president, Tom Dunkel, the famous rodent spends the time ahead of Groundhog Day "checking almanacs" and "looking at weather charts."

Groundhog Day 2025 was significant to Phil because it was his first time prognosticating as a father. The animal and his wife, Phyllis, welcomed two kits, Sunny and Shadow, in March 2024.

But now that the big moment is over, what does Phil do with the rest of the year? Dunkel tells PEOPLE that the groundhog enjoys spending his time sleeping and eating, especially bananas.

In 2025, Phil has decided to broaden his horizons and leave the stump to pursue another passion: helping people. To do so, he has taken on another job outside his prognosticator role. The groundhog is now an honorary seasonal employee of Ace Hardware — the official yard care sponsor of Groundhog Day 2025 — and is focused on helping customers with year-round yard care solutions.

Ace Hardware is keeping fans updated on Phil's performance as a seasonal employee by sharing videos on social media of the groundhog working with the brand's red vest experts.

"It was such a natural iconic partnership when you think about Ace and Groundhog Day. So, we're super excited about this. It's a great way to kickstart the season," Kim Lefko, Ace Hardware's chief marking officer, said of Phil clocking in at Ace.

Phil started at Ace Hardware at the perfect time, as the brand recently debuted Ace YardRx — a subscription service designed to deliver personalized yard care solutions directly to customers.

"Groundhog Day is about looking ahead, no matter what the weather brings, and with Ace YardRx, we're making it easy to do just that – prepare for the seasons to come with personalized product bundles delivered at the right time for a beautiful yard," Lefko shared in a statement.

Ace YardRx is a prescriptive yard care program, which means the lawn supplies sent to customers are tailored to their regional location, grass type, yard size, and brand preferences.

Interested lawn owners can learn more and get started by logging into their Ace Rewards accounts and entering their address at Ace YardRx. People can also learn more at their local Ace Hardware. Who knows, maybe Phil will be there to help.
