Great Outfits in Fashion History: Madonna's Quintessential '90s Lace Slip Dress
There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In 'Great Outfits in Fashion History,' Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks.
Throughout her career, Madonna has proven herself adept at keeping her finger on the pulse of not just music and culture, but also fashion and art. For the opening night of artist Cindy Sherman's 1997 exhibition (sponsored by Madonna herself) at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the "Queen of Pop" put on her most quintessential '90s outfit — complete with hair clips and a red lip.
Madge's purple-and-black lace dress is by London-based label Voyage. The brand reached its peak in the late '90s, with some regarding it as a turning point from the decade's minimalism (think Calvin Klein and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy) to the grungier, more colorful fashion that dominated later on.
Oddly enough, Madonna was once allegedly turned away from Voyage's highly exclusive London storefront. But that clearly didn't stop the singer from wearing (and re-wearing) the brand's coveted designs. The superstar accessorized with a black beaded pendant necklace, a gold wristwatch, subtly sparkling drop earrings and one gold ring per hand.
