Great Britain's Olympic Relay Team Win First Swimming Gold
The Great British swim team have won gold at the Paris Olympics, retaining their title in the 4x200m freestyle relay. The team consisting of Matt Richards, James Guy, Tom Dean and Duncan Scott take the Team GB total medal count to 12, and it is our fourth gold of the games so far. The relay swim team weren't the only ones to take home gold on day four, with Nathan Hales winning gold in trap shooting.
Talking to the BBC, Tom Dean who now has three Olympic golds said, 'It feels different for so many reasons, but mostly because my family and friends are in the crowd, that is the most special thing,' referring to the Tokyo Olympics when covid restrictions prevented spectators from attending. 'It is all I have been thinking about since we won it in Tokyo, to do it again,' he said.
Scottish swimmer Duncan Scott took the lead in the final leg by an easy 1.35 seconds. 'There are so many great individuals in that team but when we come together it is so special,' Scott shared, 'It fills you with confidence going up in the block with those guys.'
This is Scott's seventh Olympic medal to add to his cabinet, which includes two golds. 'I am standing behind an Olympic champion, a world champion and a world champion,' said Scott, 'I'm thinking, "I am in a pretty good place."'
James Guy now has three golds and silvers, while Matt Richards, who holds two medals, had come close to another gold in the individual event but missed by a hundredth of a second, as did Adam Peaty who lost by a small margin in the 100m breaststroke. In light of the near miss, Richard said, 'It is all learning. I want another 10 years before even thinking about hanging the goggles up.'
