Grantchester season 6 will premiere in September, ITV has confirmed
ITV has confirmed the air date for the upcoming season of beloved crime drama Grantchester.
The sixth instalment in the 1950s-set detective series will premiere on September 3 in the UK. It will be available to watch in the US on PBS a month after the UK release.
First aired in 2014, the series takes place in the Cambridgeshire village of the same name where DI Geordie Keating (Robson Green) teams up with the local vicar to solve mysteries.
Green will reprise his role in the new chapter together with Tom Brittney as Reverend William Davenport. The Outlander actor took over from James Norton's Reverend Sydney Chambers after season four.
Kacey Ainsworth will return as Geordie's wife Cathy, together with Al Weaver's character Leonard Finch, a gay Anglican curate, and Tessa Peake-Jones' religious housekeeper of the vicarage, Mrs Chapman.
The biggest surprise of this new season is the number of episodes viewers will be treated to. Grantchester season six, in fact, will have eight episodes, two more than any other season that has aired so far.
The series has already been confirmed for a seventh season, which will see Brittney stepping up behind the camera to direct an episode.
"I'm thrilled to be back on set with my Grantchester family and back in our happy place. I'm also absolutely over the moon to be given the opportunity to direct an episode this series," Brittney said in a statement of his foray into directing.
"It's been a life ambition of mine and I can't wait for the audience to see it (and also I can finally order Robson about!)," he added.
As for Robson, he was happy to return to his "happy place".
"Great to be back in the world we all refer to as our happy place," the actor said. "This new series is the best yet and is testament to the outstanding creative team that make this extraordinary, likeable, charming and entertaining tale what it is… class!"
Grantchester will premiere September 3 on ITV.
