BAFTAs 2020: Graham Norton's vintage jacket is 'older than Florence Pugh'

Graham Norton hosted the BAFTAs last night wearing an embroidered velvet jacket, which, according to his opening speech is “older than Florence Pugh”, 24.

Celebrities were asked to make “sustainable fashion choices” for this year’s awards.

The host made light of the sustainability angle, saying: “This year BAFTA have asked us to make sustainable fashion choices, old clothes.

“I have, I really have. Fun fact, this jacket is older than Florence Pugh. I’m not even joking, it really is Florence.”

We’ve seen Graham Norton wearing the jacket quite a few times previously. Most recently, he wore it to Elton John’s AIDS foundation benefit in 2018.

He also wore it to the Fashion Awards in 2016.

Stars arriving at London’s Royal Albert Hall adhered to the dress code, which encouraged guests to wear clothes they already owned or buy pre-loved outfits.

Kate Middleton, for example, wore an Alexander McQueen gown she first wore on a royal tour of Malaysia in 2012.

Graham Norton’s intricately embroidered jacket received mixed reviews on social media.

“Graham Norton just knocked every dress n suit out of the water with his vintage jacket, ohh it's stunning.” One fan of the velvet look commented.

Another announced: “Graham Norton wins best dressed for that velvet jacket.”

“I really want my sofa covered in the same fabric as Graham Norton’s jacket.” One viewer added.

It’s up for debate whether that was a compliment or not.

Among the not-so-enthused commentary, one man likened the velvet number to his Nan’s 1970’s sofa.

Like it or not, there’s a real sofa theme.

He wasn’t the only man to to use the theme as an excuse to experiment with a bit of colour.

Andy Serkis added a layer of tartan underneath his black suit with zip detailing, while Alex Wolff wore a teal three-piece suit with bold geometric print running across it.

Graham Norton touched on the environmentally-friendly theme a couple of times, jokingly commenting on how long the trip must have been for the Americans travelling over to the UK.

“A huge thank you must be made to all of our American friends for making the effort to come here tonight because, you know, I know it takes ages to sail across the Atlantic, doesn’t it?

“You did, didn’t you? Thank you for caring. It’s the eco awards, ladies and gentleman.”

Celebrities were prompted to rent outfits from Hurr Collective, By Rotation and My Wardrobe HQ in a guide created by the London College of Fashion and given to guests before the awards.

It also suggested looks could be sourced from Vestiare Collective and Depop, and highlighted eco-conscious brands including Stella McCartney and Reformation.

The awards body committed to being “carbon-neutral” for the 2020 ceremony. This included everything from travel to food, branding to materials, according to the press release for the event.

The red-carpet looked just a stylish as usual, proving that the outfits don’t need to be bought new in order to impress.
