Graham & Brown's Colour of the Year 2021 is Epoch.
A proud, regal, and luxurious tone, the purple, spiced mulberry hue of Epoch is described as a 'directional shade of plum'.In bold spaces, it can shape dramatic, high-impact interiors, but it can work just as well for pared-back interiors to favour more subdued, soothing schemes.
Calming and cocooning in tone, Graham & Brown says it echoes a wider interiors trends which looks to create restful spaces for healthier, happier homes.
Epoch pinpoints the richest purple tone in the Timepiece wallpaper (Graham & Brown's Wallpaper of the Year 2021) and amplifies it, channelling the revelry, regality, and luxury associated with the shade.
Abby Hesketh, Product Manager and Paint & Colour Specialist at Graham & Brown has shared her expert tips for styling the Graham & Brown Colour of the Year: Epoch within the home
1) Tonal pairings are a great way to make use of rich, expressive shades whilst still keeping things fairly safe. Abby explains: 'Epoch works brilliantly when used as a feature wall partnered with lighter hues of lavender and heather – this will soften the impact of the darker colour whilst ensuring that all walls of the room tie together cohesively.'
2) If drama is your goal then Abby suggests pairing Epoch with shades of teal which will result in an opulent, peacock-inspired look. Additionally, adding pops of peach can shape a playful yet sophisticated space.
3) Colour-blocking is a creative way to incorporate Epoch into a space. Below you'll see a super easy geometric design using just three Graham & Brown paints - Epoch, Spiced Mulberry, and Baby Powder; the result is a light and airy feature that would make a fun addition to a kid's bedroom, play-room, or even a lounge.
4) 'A trend we've noticed gathering momentum is pale walls paired with skirting boards and doors painted in a darker shade,' says Abby. 'This is a great way to highlight the architectural features of a room and adds a cosy element whilst still building depth and structure as we head into the autumn/winter months.' Abby suggests using Epoch across all the woodwork within a room and pairing with either a lighter shade of purple for a sophisticated tonal scheme, or with a mid-grey with warm undertones for lightweight feel.
5) Finally, you could consider creating a drop ceiling effect by using Epoch on the ceiling but then continuing the colour down to picture rail height. 'This is one of my favourite interiors trends and will work well with any of the perfectly partnered Graham & Brown paint shades,' says Abby.
