Grade II-listed home with ancient castle walls in the garden for sale
A Grade II-listed property in North Wales with an unusual surprise in the garden has just gone on the market.
If the sprawling eight-bed home bursting with historical features wasn't enough, the impressive listing also boasts ancient castle walls on its grounds.
Castle House was originally constructed in the mid-18th century as part of a larger estate and this can be seen in its original Georgian façade. The home was later renovated in the late-19th century, with this element being more noticeable once you step inside.
Entering through a light-filled vestibule, which leads into a larger hallway with parquet flooring, to the left there is a sizeable drawing room with an ornate marble fireplace and cornicing, which continues throughout the home. While to the right, you’ll find the formal dining room complete with a Renaissance-style decorative ceiling and a wonderful oak carved fireplace. The day lounge and home office are also located on this level, as well as the kitchen, which boasts a number of interesting features.
From the traditional style Tegla kitchen to the limestone slab flooring and Aga, there is plenty of character peppered throughout the downstairs of this historic home. You'll also find a seating area, pantry and separate storage cupboard, as well as an external entrance and stairs down to a cellar.
As you progress upstairs there is a mezzanine level, which currently houses a laundry room and WC, and on the first floor you’ll find four of the home's eight bedrooms, with each one on this floor having its own en-suite – complete with underfloor heating.
Up one more level are the remaining four bedrooms, with the principal and guest bedroom having further en-suites, while the remaining two bedrooms share a spacious family bathroom. Given that the principal has a number of fitted wardrobes, this could also serve as a large dressing room rather than an additional bedroom.
Outside, the grounds extend to around 4.56 acres in total and include terraced lawns to the front, with rockery gardens, a pond and mature shrubberies, alongside an outdoor dining area.
As you proceed down the drive to the front lawned garden – which is surrounded by vast woodland – a gateway opens onto a section of Denbigh Castle's ancient walls, including what is known as Goblin Tower.
Thankfully, maintenance won't be an issue for new owners as, despite the ancient castle walls falling within the property's boundaries, they are maintained by CADW – the Welsh Government's historic environment service.
Towards the rear of the home there are more gardens, as well as a private croquet lawn. You can also take a path that leads towards the remains of the ancient monument that is Leicester’s Church. Many of the original archways and external walls continue to stand to this day.
Situated in the market town of Denbigh, the property benefits from a number of local amenities including supermarkets, pubs and Denbigh Golf Club, as well as nearby primary and secondary schools. There are connections further afield via the North Wales expressway A55, providing access to the North West and beyond.
The property is currently on the market for £1,250,000 with Fisher German.
