Make this gorgeous Christmas garland
Taking time to decorate your home for the holidays is one of the joys of the season. Every crafter who is planning making their own Christmas decorations will need to decide what type of DIY Christmas garland they would like as part of their decoration planning.
Christmas garlands are popular and versatile and there are many ways to display them. You could make a DIY Christmas garland with natural foliage for a traditional design or make this easy mistletoe garland.
This pretty garland is made from fabric but doesn't require sewing – making it perfect for beginner crafters who don't have a sewing machine.
What is a Christmas garland?
Christmas garlands are a decoration that are hung up, typically over a staircase bannister, a mantlepiece or even across the walls. It's favourable to have a garland that colour co-ordinates with your other Christmas decorations and theme.
Garlands can also be laid across the table as your centrepiece. Christmas garlands don't just need to be displayed in a line, you can also play with their shape. The width of a Christmas garland should be the same across the entire garland, so if you're planning to make a DIY Christmas garland keep this in mind.
How to make a DIY Christmas garland
Handmade Christmas garlands are a versatile craft and many different materials can be used. Some Christmas garlands even have fairy lights incorporated into them. For this project we'll be showing you how to make a DIY fabric mistletoe garland.
You can make this garland as long or short as you like, depending on how much felt you have and where you want to display it. We coated the felt with fabric stiffener first to stop it from drooping, but a basic PVA glue would work, too. Go pale and interesting like ours or use green felt and red beads for a more traditional look.

Fabric stiffener and paint brush to apply
Pencil
Scrap card
Scissors
Hot glue gun
How to make a DIY mistletoe Christmas garland
Step 1: Start by preparing your felt. Apply some fabric stiffener to your sheet of white felt. While it's drying, draw four or five different mistletoe shapes on to some card and cut them out. These don't need to be perfect, simply draw them freehand. You can look online for inspiration for what type of shape to draw. Or if you prefer you could print off an image of a mistletoe and use it as a template.
Step 2: When the felt is completely dry, use the templates to draw around on to the felt. Then, cut them out, aiming to cut away any of the pencil marks. Though don't worry too much about this as a from a distance any pencil lines won't be visible.
Step 3: Take a long piece of twine and tie a knot at one end and then thread on a wooden bead. If your bead moves around, you can tie on another knot below to secure it.
Step 4: Start gluing on groups of mistletoe, varying how many leaves you use each time. Leave a gap, then add another wooden bead, then more mistletoe.
Step 5: Keep adding mistletoe and beads until the length of your garland is complete.
Finally, hang up your garland for all to admire.
