Golden Retrievers Enjoy Meet Cute Moment on Countryside Vacation and Now Reunite Almost Every Year (Exclusive)

It's almost like The Holiday for dogs.

While visiting another person's property on vacation in the Scottish countryside, Lucy the golden retriever became smitten with a local. According to Lucy's pet parents, Lauren and Jack, the couple first visited The Old Barn — an Airbnb property in Port Menteith, Scotland — in 2021 for a dog-friendly secluded getaway. At the time, Lauren and Jack only had their dog, Teddy, a 13-year-old Jack Russell Terrier.

All three loved spending time at The Old Barn, thanks to the property's walking trails, cozy quarters, stunning lake views, and kind hosts, Ronnie and Laura. The experience was so charming that Lauren and Jack returned the following year with Teddy and their new pup, Lucy, a six-month-old golden retriever puppy.

During her first visit, the often shy puppy Lucy became infatuated with the hosts' dog, another golden retriever named Bertie.

"Lucy was a bit wary at first as Bertie was a lot bigger than her, but once she realized he was safe, she was non-stop annoying him to play," Lauren and Jack tell PEOPLE, and add that Bertie was a "lovely character" throughout Lucy's needling.

So, Lucy and Bertie didn't have an undeniable connection at first, but when Lucy, now in her "teenage years" at 18 months old, visited The Old Barn with her family again this year, things went a bit differently.

"When we returned this year, they got along immediately; they were chasing each other backward and forth along the garden. She was comfortable straight away with him, so I'd like to think they recognized each other," Lucy's owners of her meet-cute with Bertie in 2024.

"Bertie definitely remembered Lucy when she came back, and they fell in love!" Ronnie and Laura summarize, adding that Bertie is often friendly with visiting pets but was "particularly" interested in spending time with Lucy.

For Lauren and Jack's third visit to "The Old Barn," Lucy played and relaxed with 3-year-old Bertie.

"They'd lie together on the terrace or in the lounge. It was really cute. Lucy would go and stand at the front door to let us know Bertie was waiting outside for her," Lauren and Jack say of Bertie and Lucy's bond.

Touched by the dogs' rapidly forming friendship, Lauren and Jack made a TikTok clip about the pair for Lucy's account (@lucythegoldenretriever). In the clip, Bertie waits by Lucy's Airbnb door each day for her to come out and play. The video also shows the dogs frolicking around the Scottish countryside together and ends with Lucy letting Bertie know she will see him next year.

The clip received over 650,000 views on TikTok and attracted the attention of Airbnb, which offered Lauren and Jack a voucher for their next stay at The Old Barn to ensure that Bertie and Lucy get more time together.

"We couldn't believe it! We never expected anything like that," the couple says of Airbnb's gift.

The burgeoning relationship between Bertie and Lucy has also inspired numerous travelers to look into Ronnie and Laura's lakeside oasis.

"We were amazed that so many people saw the video and clearly found their friendship very touching. It is great to see two dogs becoming such great friends and having a wonderful time together," the hosts added about the golden retrievers' online fame.

Lauren, Jack, Lucy, and Teddy are planning their next trip to The Old Barn, where Bertie and Lucy will be able to deepen their friendship. Until the dogs can be together again, they stay in touch through Whatsapp and TikTok.
