Going out for Halloween this year? Here are our favourite looks
If you're thinking about an epic costume for Halloween this year, then you've come to the right place.
Whether you're hosting a party (or attending as a guest), going trick-or-treating or just want to have a little fun at home while baking something creepy (like these Cyclops cupcakes), we've compiled some seriously cool, unique and impressive costume ideas for Halloween that don't involve kitten ears or a vampire cape!
Did you know Halloween trees were a thing? Us either! Until our Homes Editor found these trendy options to display in your home. Happy Halloween...🎃
Laundry Machine and Dryer
How adorable is this? Go solo as a laundry machine or pick a willing partner to go with you as a dryer. Once you have white-painted cardboard boxes and cut out holes for the head and arms, the creativity is all on you. Print out control panels and dials (or paint them on) and glue on a few pairs of old socks or empty boxes of dryer sheets to really sell the look.
Lipsmacker
This is unlocking serious nostalgia and everyone loved a Lip Smacker back in the day, so they'll especially love this easy ensemble, which is basically just a t-shirt dress (with our Lip Smacker template ironed onto it) and a matching plastic beach bucket as the 'cap'.
Stanley Cups
If you also became obsessed with the viral Stanley Quenchers then why not dress up as it for Halloween? All you need is a monochromatic matching tracksuit picked out, use our Stanley template to make an iron-on patch for the front of your sweatshirt. Then it's just a matter of getting sturdy white paper plates and a white paper towel roll and gluing them together for the lid and straw. Attach the lid and straw to elastic or a headband and you're done! This idea works really well as a group costume, too.
Dolly Parton
Honestly, who doesn't love Dolly? To recreate her iconic look, you can either buy a platinum blonde wig or have some DIY fun constructing her golden locks using a large piece of cardboard, some yellow and brown craft paint, and a craft knife. Pair the hair cutout with a country-esque outfit and a toy ukulele. Jolene, you better watch out.
Scrub Daddy
We're big fans of this viral sponge thanks to TikTok and this adorable costume couldn't be easier to put together once you've secured a foam egg carton mattress topper, some cardboard, craft paint and some thick ribbon.
Instructions:
Begin with two large cardboard circles and paint both sides a shade darker than the foam topper.
Using sharp fabric scissors, cut two circles out of the foam, about two inches wider than the cardboard.
Trace and cut a smiley face from one of the foam circles. Attach both pieces of foam to the cardboard with hot glue.
Attach thick ribbon straps to both circles with duct or Gaffer tape. Complete your look with rubber cleaning gloves.
Tennis Players
Who's up for a round of doubles? Grab your girlies for a Challengers tenniscore look to show off your love of the sport. Preppy sweaters, white sneakers, athletic skirts, visors, and tennis rackets are all you need to pull off the look. Game, set, match!
Elphaba and Glinda from 'Wicked'
You're sure to be popular this Halloween if you dress up as the most famous witches in Oz. Princess crowns, wands, and a pink dress will do for Glinda. Elphaba is also easy as long as you can use an old black dress and secure a witch hat. As for the green body paint, it's up to you whether you want to go full-on or only apply a few swipes to the cheeks and temples (like our model here!).
Charcuterie Board
Love a charcuterie board? Why not dress like it? This costume works best with multiple people and requires yellow and red craft paint and styrofoam cake rounds for creating the slices of Gouda, which you can then attach to a headband with hot glue or place on a wooden board as a prop to carry around. As for the grape headband, you'll have a bit of crafting to do once you buy purple tree ornaments and some floral wire. But don't worry, it's easy!
Instructions:
Cut several 30cm lengths of floral wire. Thread an ornament onto the centre of each wire and twist the ends together.
Gather all of the wired ornaments and twist the wires together to create a tapered bunch of grapes. Trim any excess wire pieces off and wrap any exposed wire with floral tape.
Cut a grape leaf shape from green paper and attach it to the bunch with hot glue.
Wire two small hair combs to the bottom of the bunch to secure onto your head. You might need some extra bobby pins to secure as well.
Carmy from 'The Bear'
Yes, chef! A denim apron, an old white tee and black pants are all you really need to transform into the talented chef. You can add to the costume with a plastic container full of drinking water and a towel if you want ... or you can just yell "cousin!" at your friends all night. The choice is yours.
Devilled Egg
Devilled eggs, the retro canape is back on the menu this Halloween and what better way than to dress like one! Once you've bought a white egg-shaped styrofoam structure, you'll just need to cut it in half and glue on yellow rope, green pipe cleaners, and red sequins to create the yolk. Once that's dry, hot glue the egg onto a white headband and that's it!
David and Victoria Beckham
The Beckhams are always in the spotlight. Posh Spice is easy to execute so long as you have an LBD and oval-shaped shades. David is a piece of cake, as well — get jersey numbers and iron a "7" on any white jersey or pullover you have. Pair with white athletic shorts, knee-high socks, and sneakers. You can also opt for temporary tattoos if you want to fully commit.
Barbie and Ken
After the massive success of the Barbie movie, it's a no-brainer to grab your Ken and go as the iconic duo.
Tetris
A low key outfit and a blast from the past that's so easy to create, it makes it hard to think of a reason not to dress up this year. Grab an all-black outfit and some Post-Its to finish the costume.
Mario and Luigi
It's an easy and comfortable option for kids, but because you can buy the accessories for adults, it's a fun one for grown-ups, too.
Tanya from White Lotus
Tanya won't be in season 3 (sob!), so this is the year to honor all of her chaotic energy. Grab a long-sleeved dress, a scarf to wrap around your head, gold heels, over sized sunglasses and continuously have a glass of Prosecco in your hand for the evening.
Negroni Sbagliato with Prosecco
If you didn't see Emma D'Arcy's viral video from, well years ago now, please check it out now. Then, grab two of your friends, use our label templates and recreate this genius trio costume.
Crayons
We created templates for you to follow so you can easily recreate the hats (and yep, another look that works for adults). The rest of the look is made with some duct tape and your favourite sweats.
Error 404 Costume
Another really simple costume to recreate, this error 404 message idea will go down as one of the funniest costumes of the night (and not to mention the most infuriating moment when a page doesn't load). Just buy iron on letters and a white t-shirt and you're good to go.
Emily in Paris
Season 4 of Emily in Paris was nothing short of spectacular, so dress like your favourite American in Paris with this simple costume idea. All it takes is a red skirt, a Breton top, a beret and you're on your way!
Ariel from the Little Mermaid
Disney is always a good idea for Halloween, especially when it's someone as magical as Ariel.
Beetlejuice and Lydia Halloween Costume
If you're planning to take on Halloween as a couple, draw inspiration from Bella Hadid and The Weeknd's flawless portrayal of Beetlejuice and Lydia.
Queen of Hearts Costume
The Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland is an iconic character and the best part is, you just need a deck of cards and an awesome red dress to DIY this costume. To make the collar, wrap a large piece of paper around your neck so you can trim it down to the right size. Then, staple cards from a deck all around the paper collar, layering them for a fanned-out effect.
Joker Halloween Costume
This unique spin on Joaquin Pheonix's Joker from the 2019 movie is a total winner — especially with that neon green hair and spot-on makeup.
Mona Lisa Halloween Costume
We can't help but laugh at this one. It's the perfect last-minute idea if you have an old frame lying around (or if you can grab one from your local charity store).

Nina from Black Swan Costume
Padma Lakshmi's rendition of the star of the 2010 thriller Black Swan will never get old. To pull this off you'll need a black corset, feathers and some serious makeup skills.
Don Alejandro from The Legend of Zorro Costume
The sword toting hero of The Legend of Zorro has a getup that will make the ultimate Halloween costume. The best part: Other than the accessories, you can basically dress in all black.
Willy Wonka Costume
One of the sweetest looks to arrive at Heidi Klum's annual Halloween party was Zac Posen's version of Willy Wonka. Beyond the khaki pants that you may already have in your closet, you'll need a royal purple blazer, bow tie and brown hat. Golden ticket, optional.
Holly Golightly Costume
Audrey Hepburn's character Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany's is always a great option for Halloween. Not only is it timeless, but it also doesn't require too much fuss to put together.
DIY Houseplant Halloween Costume
This adorable plant costume is too cute not to make this Halloween. Take a woven basket and cut a hole in the bottom for hips and legs to fit through.
Download a leaf template and trace onto green paper. Trim and fold in half. Next, you'll want to get craft wire and cut at different lengths. Create stems by threading with green straws, dabbing hot glue as you thread to hold in place. Once you finish threading, you can hot glue the leafs to the end of the stems.
To attach the stems, hot glue them to the inside of the basket and reinforce with duct tape if needed. Avoid attaching on the sides.
Then, make the shoulder straps by cutting green ribbon and attach to the inside front and back of the basket with velcro tape or safety pins.
As for finishing touches, bend the stems around you for a realistic look!
DIY Bird Halloween Costume
Kids (and adults alike) can fly door-to-door collecting sweets on Halloween night with these amazing DIY wings.
First, take coffee filters and cupcake liners and fold in half. With leftover cardboard boxes, cut out two oval wings. Start with one wing and attach the coffee filters with tape, making sure that they overlap to create a feathered look. Next, add in a few white and metallic cupcake liners to add texture and create depth to the wing.
Create a tube out of cardboard that fits the circumference of your arm. Fasten to the back of the wing and secure with duct tape. Cover with more cupcake liners and coffee filters to hide where it attaches. Now, all that is left to do is the second wing!
Maleficent Halloween Costume
Halima Aden's fierce version of Disney's Maleficent was a very memorable moment from Heidi Klum's 20th annual Halloween party.
Thanos Halloween Costume
This costume deserves all of the infinity stones! Once you nail down the purple face paint and either DIY or buy an Infinity Gauntlet, the rest of the gear you probably already have at home.
The Mask Halloween Costume
The '90s are back, so why not dress as one of the most iconic characters from then? Who knows, maybe it's just the shake up you need.
Cloud and Rainbow Halloween Costume
You can't have a rainbow without some rain, after all! This adorable mother-daughter duo costume will add some colour to your Halloween.
'Men In Black' Halloween Costume
Here's an easy last-minute costume for couples or BFFs: Just put on your best black suit, a tie, and a pair of sunglasses to recreate the iconic look from Men In Black!
Sandy Halloween Costume
'Grease' is definitely the word! Model Gigi Hadid stole the show with this stunning post-makeover Sandy costume from Grease, and we honestly think it's still a fashionable look today.
Green With Envy Halloween Costume
We're suckers for an adorable pun and this is one for not just couples, but friends and family too! With a green and white shirt, you're just four letters away from one of the best (not to mention, easiest) costumes ever.
