Glossier's Perfumer On Expanding The Glossier You Universe
While skin scents have been around since the Nineties, it was arguably Glossier You that put these musky, gentle wafts back into our collective consciousness when it launched in 2017. Those who enjoy a showstopper scent might find Glossier You a little too sheer, but its cosy, 'clean skin' vibe found a loyal fanbase. Spritzing Glossier You was like pulling on a soft cashmere jumper, cosseting, comforting and just enough for those in your orbit to smell it.

Perfumer Frank Voekl created the magic of Glossier You using a combination of powdery iris, ambrox (present in most compositions deemed a 'skin' scent), warm ambrette and a light sprinkling of pink pepper.
Since then, many ancillaries followed - including a solid perfume, travel spray, candle and most recently, a body cream. Today, Glossier launches two new variations of Glossier You; Rêve and Doux, both composed by Voekl. The former is Glossier's take on gourmand, fluffy and creamy, with a nostalgic '90s mood. Meanwhile, Doux is milkier, with hint ambery hints of frankincense.
'We began working on the new additions, Glossier You Doux and Glossier You Rêve, more than three years ago,' Voekl tells ELLE. 'However, for Emily Weiss (Glossier's original founder), the conception of the perfumes came a long time before. Emily likes to say Glossier You has always been the beginning of something; it’s fragrance number one in the Glossier fragrance journey, always knowing that there was more to come.'
While there are key differences in Rêve and Doux, it's clear that both scents stay true to You's DNA. 'The starting point for both fragrances was really about capturing the essence of Glossier You while creating something entirely new,' agrees Voekl, explaining that the ethos of Glossier You has always been the 'idea of enhancing who you are.'
He adds: 'We really focused on maintaining that emotional connection, creating scents that make you feel more like yourself while still exploring new ingredients and spaces that felt true to the brand.'
Both new additions do smell distinctly different to the original, despite respecting its skin-like essence. Rêve's sweetened version (Voekl describes it as 'having a good moment with your friends; there is something a bit more playful') is deliciously plush, with plum butter and buttercream, balanced with the woodiness of sandalwood and toasted almonds, which lends extra depth. It also uses a clever flavour translation technology.
'It allows us to use actual flavours in perfumery and get a “taste-like” experience,' says Voekl.
As for Doux, an extra dose smooth creaminess replaces the soapy fresh opening of the original You. 'The moodboard swayed more earthy, grounded, serene, and mature. It felt like quiet luxury with a lot of duality in there,' shares Voekl.
There's truly a You for everyone.
