Michelle Keegan has officially announced that she will be leaving the hit BBC One drama Our Girl.

The star has been playing Lance Corporal Georgie Lane since the second series began four years ago, with the upcoming fourth series being her last.

"I've had the most incredible four years on the show," she told The Sun, "and I want to thank the BBC for giving me such an amazing opportunity.

"Playing Georgie has been a life changing role for me. I've loved every second of the adventure so it was a very hard decision to make not to return.

"I feel it is the right time to explore other exciting opportunities but I'm so happy to be part of the new series coming soon so it's not the end just yet."

Filming for the show takes place across the world, and Keegan's wish to spend some more time in the United Kingdom was the basis for her decision to step away from the show.

The six-part series 4, which was filmed last year, will begin with Georgie in Manchester struggling to come to terms with Elvis' death, before a near-fatal incident on a night out makes her realise she needs to return to Afghanistan and confront her demons.

New cast members for series 4 include former Hollyoaks goth Nico Mirallego, Ackley Bridge's Amy-Leigh Hickman, EastEnders stars Danny-Boy Hatchard and Nabil Elouahabi, Revenge's Josh Bowman, Dunkirk actor Will Attenborough, Raised by Wolves' Kaine Zajaz, The Looming Tower's Nebras Jamali, and Unforgotten's Badria Timini.

Meanwhile, series one star Lacey Turner has said that she would "love" to come back as Molly Dawes.

Our Girl returns to BBC One some time in 2020.
