Girl shocked to find portrait she painted as a child for sale at antique market ‘five towns over’
What started as a nonchalant trip to a thrift store ended with one TikToker reuniting with an old painting of hers — one she didn’t even realize was for sale.
Nicole Dominguez (@mynamemeansvictory) visited an antique warehouse “five towns over on a whim” when she saw a familiar piece of artwork.
“POV: You visit an antique warehouse five towns over on a whim and the first thing you see is the portrait of your mom you did when you were 5yo being sold for $48.00 as ‘Amateur Watercolor,'” reads the text on her video.
In the clip, a confused Nicole walks toward the camera while holding her portrait. She looks around in disbelief. Luckily, she reveals, the seller let her keep it for free.
The video, which has more than 588,900 views and 95,200 likes, has commenters equally flabbergasted as to how this seemingly sentimental piece of art ended up for sale in a totally different town.
“Mom has some explaining to do,” wrote @ab_reedbooks.
“How did it get there?!” said @livefreeortour.
“MOM!!!! How did this leave her house?” asked @_biglittlebaby_.
Nicole posted a separate video, entitled “STORYTIME,” to clarify the situation.
“The first thing that I saw was the portrait of my mom that I did when I was five. I immediately FaceTimed my mom who was shocked that it was being sold, and she instructed me to buy it back no matter the cost and ask where they sourced it,” she explains.
Nicole notes that she and her mom recently moved. Some of their items, she says, were “left in old furniture and some just being put in storage.”
The warehouse owners contacted the vendor who claims she doesn’t know where she got it from.
“She said that because it came in a frame already, she could not get the back off of it… I told them that if they opened the back they would see the date, name and the age I was when I painted it written by my mom on the back.”
Nicole then comes to her mom’s defense.
“We’re very very happy that she’s home.”
“For those who say that my mom gave it away, you do not know my mom,” she laughs, noting that her mom has just one piece each of childhood art from Nicole and her sister.
“Because of the small space of our new house, she wrapped it up and had to choose to put it in storage. And that’s where she thought it was, even though she was looking for it later on.”
“We still have no idea how this piece ended up in a thrift store, but we’re very very happy that she’s home,” concludes Nicole.
Commenters question the vendor’s honesty.
“im suspicious about the vendor ‘not knowing’ where she got it from. you guys should be sure nothing else is missing from storage!” wrote @raiseusfromperdition.
“Did someone buy out your storage unit on accident? Like they were supposed to open the one next to it and got confused?” wondered @lucky405421.
“the vendor probably somehow acquired it and tried to play it off as real art and was too ashamed to admit so they just said TAKE IT,” commented @andtheniappeared.
Regardless of how it happened, we’re just happy Nicole finally has her childhood artwork back!
