Girl power! Kate Winslet has a major new Netflix role and she’s bringing Helen Mirren with her
It’s official – Kate Winslet is turning her hand to directing and she’s bringing none other than Helen Mirren on the ride with her. The Oscar-winning actress will make her feature film directorial debut with Netflix’s Goodbye June, with Mirren playing one of her illustrious cast member. We dare you to name a better partnership.
Described by Netflix as "a heartwarming yet humorous drama," the film follows a fractured group of siblings as they come together under challenging circumstances. And with two brilliant women (and a few more, but more of that later) attached, it's got awards contender written all over it. As we wait with bated breath for its release, here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming film…
What is Goodbye June about?
The film is a contemporary fictional drama about a fractured group of siblings who pull together under sudden and trying circumstances. Netflix are keeping a lot of the finer details under wraps for the time being, but we do know that, as well as directing, Kate will also be starring in the film.
She will be joined by Toni Collette, Johnny Flynn, Andrea Riseborough and Timothy Spall. We also know that Winslet’s son, Joe Anders, with her ex-husband Sam Mendes, has written the screenplay and Winslet is also producing the film alongside Kate Solomon.
This won't be the first time Winslet and Solomon have worked together, as Solomon also produced Winslet’s most recent film, Lee, the biopic about model turned war photographer Lee Miller, which became Sky’s highest-grossing original film. Mirren and Winslet have also been colleagues before, having starred together in the 2016 film Collateral Beauty.
Winslet has already proven herself a master at tackling family drama, having given a poignant performance in Channel 4’s I Am Ruth, as concerned mother Ruth who witnesses her teenage daughter Freya (Mia Threapleton) retreating into herself due to a phone addiction. Will she do it again in Goodbye June? We don’t doubt it.
