German Supermarket Edeka’s Christmas Advert Will Have You In Pieces
When it comes to cry factor, German supermarket Edeka blows John Lewis’ Man On The Moon out of the solar system.
Anyone who’s flown the nest can relate to that parent-child ‘you never come home’ guilt. German supermarket Edeka spins that shameful feeling to the extreme with their Christmas commercial. It’ll have you weeping into your sprouts.
The ad begins with a lonely montage of an elderly man opening a card from his daughter; we hear her voicemail explaining: “I just wanted to call and let you know that we can’t make it for Christmas this year. We’ll try again next year. It’ll work out, I promise.”
Alone, he prepares Christmas dinner. He pauses to gaze longingly out of the window at a neighbouring family, laden with gifts, excitedly greeting each other.
We see him spend several Christmases by himself.
The advert cuts between the busy lives of his three adult offspring as they receive the sad news of their fathers death.
Dressed in black, snow swirling, the devastated siblings return to the family home to pay their respects.
They arrive to find the dining table set for dinner and their father alive and well. He tells them, “How else could I have bought you all together?”
Cue the tears of guilt.
The reunited family have a lovely Christmas dinner courtesy of Edeka. Everyone is happy and not a word is said about the massive lie or the serial abandonment of the elderly.
