Georgia AD frustrated with Vanderbilt postponement, fears makeup game won't be played on Dec. 19

Outgoing Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity let it be known how unhappy he was when he found out that Vanderbilt wouldn’t be playing the Bulldogs on Saturday.

The game was postponed to Dec. 19 on Friday because of a player shortage at Vanderbilt. The school has been dealing with limited numbers of scholarship players due to injuries, COVID-19 and opt outs. The school then made the decision that it wouldn’t be able to meet the minimum of 53 scholarship players for the game.

McGarity, who announced his retirement earlier in the week, said after the postponement that he was frustrated with the decision. And said that he feared that Vanderbilt wouldn’t be making the trip to Athens on Dec. 19.

“They should be angry, and we’re angry, too,” McGarity said via DawgNation of Georgia fans and players who wanted the game to be played.

“It’s just extremely frustrating and extremely disappointing, especially if the game on the 19th can’t be played, and that’s what we fear.”

The game was set to be No. 8 Georgia’s final home game of the season and senior day festivities had been planned.

It’s also Georgia’s second postponement of the season. The Bulldogs get an unexpected off week on Saturday before playing Missouri on Dec. 12 and now winless Vanderbilt on Dec. 19. The Vanderbilt game is scheduled to be on the same day as the SEC championship game. Florida can clinch the East title and a spot in that game over Georgia with a win on Saturday against Tennessee.

If the Vanderbilt game is, for whatever reason, not played on Dec. 19, Georgia would end the season with just three home games. The Bulldogs had just four games at home in its original 10-game schedule because it was the designated home team for the annual Florida-Georgia game in Jacksonville.

Ten games are currently scheduled as makeup games across Dec. 12 and 19. Eight teams are playing two games over the two weekends.
