Gavin & Stacey star Joanna Page has shared an update regarding the future of the show, and unfortunately it’s not a positive one.
The BBC sitcom was last on the small screen in 2019, with the audience left on tenterhooks as to whether Smithy (James Cordon) accepted Nessa’s (Ruth Jones) marriage proposal.
Corden has since left his stint as host of The Late Late Show, with a reunion with co-writer Jones leading fans to speculate that another special was on the way, but Page has dampened that excitement with the latest update.
“I can see them never doing any more because it was nice to leave it on a cliffhanger because it's up to the viewer to imagine what would have happened,” she told the Daily Mail. “So I can imagine them ending it like that.
“I wouldn't be surprised if I didn't get the call, and I wouldn't be surprised if I did. If there is a comeback, I'll find out at the same time as the public because I don't get told anything. Gavin and Stacey kids would be teenagers now, so that would be quite funny to see.”
Page also reflected on the longevity of the sitcom, remarking that the initial meeting between the titular characters – which occurred on a blind date – would now likely not occur, saying: "If you were going to do it these days, it would be totally different.
“It all started with a phone call between Gavin and Stacey, but now everything would be done by email or a Zoom call – you certainly wouldn't be sitting there chatting on the phone. It's so funny as it wasn't that long ago, but life has changed so much.”
Gavin & Stacey is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
