Gavin and Stacey star Rob Brydon drops 'fishing trip' hint with six-word message
Gavin and Stacey star Rob Brydon has hinted that viewers will never find out what really happened on the infamous fishing trip.
The Welsh actor will reprise his role as Uncle Bryn for one last time when the iconic BBC show returns for its final episode on Christmas Day. Fans will be glued to their screens after the last Christmas Day special, which aired in 2019, ended on a cliffhanger.
The episode ended with Nessa proposing to Smithy, played by co-creators Ruth Jones and James Cordon, outside Gwen's home in Barry Island, but viewers never got to hear his response.

Now, fans are hoping that the finale will bring an answer to that all-important question, while also shedding some light on what happened during the famous fishing trip.
One of the show's many long-running jokes centres around the trip taken by Uncle Bryn, played by Brydon, and his nephew Jason, played by Robert Wilfort. The events of the trip caused friction between the pair for years, without either of them ever revealing what actually happened.
Speaking on Jamie Laing's Great Company podcast today, December 23, Brydon hinted that fans may never find out what did happen that day between him and Jason.
When asked by Jamie what really happened, the 59-year-old replied: "I'm not going to tell you. You wouldn't really want to know, would you?
"I'm somebody who, if my wife has bought me a present, say at Christmas, and it's under the tree, there is no part of me that wants to go 'I wonder what it is'.
"No, no, no, I am for delayed gratification. Let's wait, let's enjoy it. And even when I'm opening it, I'm opening it slowly."
The critically acclaimed series follows the lives of titular characters Gavin (Matthew Horne) from Essex and Stacey (Joanna Page) from South Wales, documenting key points in their long-distance relationship and events that bring the two families together.
Gavin and Stacey first aired on BBC Three in 2007 and spanned 20 episodes over the course of three series. The original cast all return for the finale, including Uncle Bryn and Jason, making it the final chance for the burning question to finally be answered.
Cordon has been firm this will be the last episode as he said the show “cannot carry on” after the Christmas Day episode.
He told Hits Radio on Friday: “It can’t carry on, it genuinely can’t. And you’ll realise that there’s certain moments that happen in the episode which make it very, very clear that the show cannot carry on.
“We as writers wouldn’t know how to carry on that story.” For the latest TV & Showbiz news, sign up to our newsletter
