Jason said: "I remember James saying, he thinks if Smithy and Sonia didn’t have any other family, it was just them, they’d probably be fine. But because there's this whole other world…". Sonia Aikman, who played the jilted bride agreed and added: "Yeah, there's this whole other world that she can't can't assimilate into. She cannot do it."
The finale concluded with Smithy and Nessa ending up getting married to each other, and celebrating their nuptials with the West and Shipman families. During the retrospective documentary, Gavin & Stacey: A Fond Farewell, co-creator and star Ruth Jones explained why the viewers "can never see" Smithy and Nessa's relationship.
She said: "Once Smithy and Nessa got together, that really is the end. Because we can never see them actually living together." Corden agreed and added: "Oh no, it would be awful". He later added: "It just won't work".
