Gaurav Gupta Channeled a Message of Healing for Spring 2025 Couture

There is often a spiritual element to Gaurav Gupta’s designs. With an invitation in the form of a singing bowl, a meditative theme was clearly on the cards.

Last June, Gupta and his life partner and “twin flame,” poet and performer Navkirat Sodhi, were badly burnt in a fire, preventing Gupta from showing his fall collection in Paris. Sodhi suffered 55 percent burns and has undergone eight operations since, and Gupta’s hand was also badly injured. “She is opening the show today, showing her scars to the world, and we are spreading awareness around burns, around acid victims, around resilience, around love,” Gupta said backstage before the show.

As the lights came up, Sodhi walked barefoot through the venue, reciting a poem about the healing journey. It was their recovery process, working with spiritual healers, that provided the starting point for Gupta’s powerful, otherworldly collection.

In one look, a specially created jacquard with a Sanskrit chant woven into the cloth was used to create a dramatic sculptural collar in gold on black, with the text repeated on the model’s face.

Gupta expanded on his experimentation with cast metal, creating breastplates and half masks evoking both alienation and protection, while signature jewelry pieces evoked the chakras. His dramatic sculpted and looped dresses, which have made him a red-carpet favorite, created voluminous swirls around the models’ bodies.

The color palette was heavily informed by their experience, with a deep ochre satin twisted to create structured bodices evoking rising flames or a fluid jersey in the same shade draped over a pair of models in an interlinked dress representing the twin flame experience.

There were bandage-like designs in white and the introduction of denim, including a sculpted bodice in the palest of blues. Deep purples and blues suggested celestial guides. “They’re literally the out of body experience we’ve had during this process,” Gupta said backstage before the show. Many of the fabrics glittered as if illuminated from within, and specially crafted horned headdresses and a live sound bath accentuated the mystical experience.
