Picking up a coffee from your favourite coffee shop is a ritual loads of us cherish, especially if we're in need of a caffeine hit.

Today, a report from Which? revealed that the caffeine buzz you get from your drink can massively vary depending on which coffee shop you go to.

They compared the caffeine content in espresso, cappuccino and filter coffee from different high street chains, including some of the nation's faves: Costa, Pret and Starbucks.

The results were pretty surprising to say the least. Costa Coffee was revealed to have the highest caffeine content in their cappuccino, with 325mg per 363ml of coffee. So if you're in need of a boost, Costa's clearly the way to go. This varied massively from Starbucks, which only had 66mg of caffeine per 350ml of capp. That's less caffeine than you'd get in a good old cup of tea!

The caffeine content of Costa's cappuccino was the highest by a mile, with the next most caffeinated coming in at 197mg per 341ml at Greggs.

If you're an espresso sort of person, you'll want to head to Pret, where their espresso has 180mg per 30ml. Again, Starbucks contained the least caffeine in their espresso shots, with just 33mg per 25ml.

Here's the full breakdown:

Cappuccino

  • Costa: 325mg (362ml)

  • Greggs: 197mg (341ml)

  • Pret: 180mg (350ml)

  • Caffè Nero: 110-115mg (355ml)

  • Starbucks: 66mg (350ml)

Single-shot espresso

  • Pret: 180mg (30ml)

  • Costa: 100mg (30ml)

  • Greggs: 75mg (28ml)

  • Caffè Nero: 45mg (30ml)

  • Starbucks: 33mg (25ml)

Filter/brewed Coffee

  • Greggs: 225mg (341ml)

  • Starbucks: 102mg (350ml)

While you might be tempted to go and guzzle down a couple of Costa's mega-caffeinated coffees, you should keep in mind the 600mg safe limit. Going over this amount, according to reporting by Which?, might result in insomnia, nervousness, irritability and increased blood pressure, which certainly puts a dampener on those delicious capps!
