Former Wales and Real Madrid star Gareth Bale 'very proud' after receiving MBE from Prince William

Former Wales captain and Real Madrid star Gareth Bale said he was "very proud" after receiving his MBE from the Prince of Wales.

Bale was awarded the MBE for services to football and charity as part of the Queen's final birthday honours.

He said it was "a very special morning surrounded by so many incredible and inspiring people".

The honour comes after a stellar career, having been the first Wales captain to lead his country out at a World Cup in 64 years.

The 33-year-old made 111 appearances for his country and scored 41 goals over a 16-year period.

He also leaves behind a glittering career at club level having won the Champions League five times with Real Madrid.

Bale said receiving an MBE was "a very proud moment for my family and I".

"I joined a football academy at the age of 9, so the sport is a defining part of my identity," he said.

"I recognise the privilege of being able to do what I love, and for all of the incredible moments, experiences, achievements and memories football has given me. I hope I have been able to give just as much back.

"Football is my whole life and I am deeply humbled to be recognised by the Queen."
