Men's + Women's Health Make a Mattress? YepHearst Owned

In what TikTok might describe as classic ‘boy core’ style, I haven’t given a huge amount of thought to my sleeping arrangements in the past. Despite living independently for two decades, I genuinely can’t recall ever even having purchased a mattress. It’s a bit grim, in retrospect, but I have no idea where any of my mattresses have come from in the in the last twenty years. Yikes.

But that was ‘old me’, or more accurately, current me is feeling older. Years worth of heavy lifting and adventurous living have left me with a bit of wear and tear, and I had reached the point where ‘it’ll feel better in the morning’ was a sentiment I could no longer sturdily rely on. I had a feeling my mystery mattress was playing a part in that.

My ethos nowadays is very much ‘the work you do is a reflection of the rest you get’. One of the 'big rocks' of optimal rest is undoubtedly sleep, and one of the biggest rocks of optimal sleep is undoubtedly what you sleep on.

With that in mind, and being a lifetime uber-fan of the Men’s Health brand, I set out to see if the Sealy Recharge+ Men’s and Women’s Health mattress could put a little pep back in my step.

Delivery and Unpacking

With a free, two-man delivery service, you can put to bed any worries about dragging this beast of a mattress up the stairs solo. And a beast it is. I’d jettisoned our old mattress shortly before this one arrived, all by myself without much fuss, when this one arrived I asked the delivery team if I could help them, so I got a good feel for it. It’s heavy- in the best possible way — feeling durable, reliable, and high quality. It’s made of high calibre, sleep benefitting materials (more on that later), and they’ve packed a LOT of that material in here. The Recharge+ is the perfect mixture of dense where it needs to be, and soft where you want it to be.

Delivery boxed off, mattress in situ, all that was left for me to do was remove the plastic wrapping, and it was ready to go — no waiting for it to expand (which I’m told) is an annoyance of many mattress unboxings.

Comfort and Performance

I’ve had the mattress now for a few months, but I’ll be honest, from the very first time I laid on it I questioned everything I had been doing in terms of my sleeping arrangements up until that point. My partner echoed this sentiment. Why, why, why had we been slumbering on such an incredibly subpar mattress for so long when this was an option. We actually laughed about it the first night we slipped between the sheets.

There are a lot of factors involved in quality sleep: what you eat and drink, and when, your activity levels, injury history, temperature of the room, the list goes on… But the Sealy Recharge+ Men's and Women's Health mattress definitely contributes positively to the cause. It’s equipped with 2,300 springs for optimal support (we'll get to those), there’s a gel-infused comfort layer, designed to eliminate pressure points and help prevent tossing and turning. It gives the mattress the perfect level of cushioning.

For me, that cushioning is important. I’m a side sleeper, and even with a mattress topper (and in hotels with better quality beds than I was previously accustomed to at home), I’d often wake up sore from overly firm mattress.

The top layer of this mattress is crafted with SmarTex, a cooling fabric that wicks moisture and regulates temperature to keep you cool. This was something I hadn’t ever considered a mattress could have an influence over, but we live in a small cottage, our bedroom is in a loft room, the roof directly above us, and the in the summer it effectively becomes a clay oven. We often have to sleep downstairs to keep cool. However, the Recharge+ made a huge difference in this regard, to the point where I think this alone makes the mattress a top tier purchase for improving the quality of your sleep.

Lastly, Quantum Edge technology extends support right to the edges of the bed, avoiding sagging and the weird piping ‘you’re at the edge of the bed’ experience you often get. It’s a smart design that genuinely enhances the sleep experience.

As a side note, this mattress is fairly tall, as mattresses go. We sleep with the foot of our bed pressed against a large window wall overlooking a nice bit of Essex countryside (yes, there are nice looking bits). The height of the mattress has now brought the edge of the bed directly in line with the bottom of the window, so there's no real gap. The cats absolutely love being able to sprawl out on the edge of the bed, enjoying a panoramic view of our (their) garden.

Spring Count

The Sealy Recharge+ Men’s and Women’s Health mattress contains 1,500 pocket springs and 800 mini springs for a whopping total of 2,300 springs.

Obviously, I had to go away and find out what this all means, so I let me help you out here: generally, the more pocket springs in a mattress, the better, as it provides increased support. For comparison, most high-quality mattresses have about 1,000 springs. The Sealy Recharge+ far exceeds that with 2,300, thanks to the combination of pocket and mini springs. These mini springs add a touch of extra give and help support those who tend to move around a lot during the night.

Cost

The Sealy Recharge+ Men's and Women's Health mattress costs £1,399 for a double, £1,599 for a king, and £1,899 for a super king. It’s a premium investment, reflecting its high quality. But keep your eyes peeled for seasonal sales, where discounts are often available.
