The trailer for Tom Hanks’ new film, A Man Called Otto, has been released.

The film is an adaptation of Fredrik Backman’s novel A Man Called Ove, which had previously been made into a 2015 Swedish film.

Hanks will play the titular character, a “grumpy widower” who is set in his ways. “When a lively young family moves in next door, he meets his match in quick-witted and very pregnant Marisol, leading to an unlikely friendship that will turn his world upside-down,” reads the synopsis.

Starring alongside Hanks will be The Umbrella Academy actor Cameron Britton, Rachel Keller (Fargo) and Mike Birbiglia (Orange Is the New Black). Marc Forster, best known for Christopher Robin and World War Z, will direct the film, with the script being written by David Magee (Lady Chatterley’s Lover).

Hanks was last seen in Disney’s remake of Pinocchio as Geppetto, while he also recently played Colonel Tom Parker in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis.

The acting legend is also due to appear in Wes Anderson’s newest film, Asteroid City, which boasts a stacked cast including Tilda Swinton, Adrien Brody and Margot Robbie.

Speaking about Elvis, Hanks has said the story of the music manager was “extraordinary”.

“The amount of ways that Parker cheated people out of nickels and dimes and dollars is extraordinary, and in my own way I've incorporated some of that in my own life,” he joked.

“As far as his background, I think no one knew the Colonel's background. There are some extraordinary, tabloidy, melodramatic stories about why and how he left Holland.

“I'd like to think, yeah, he was running away from an aspect of his past and escaping his small town, and who among us wouldn't jump at an opportunity to do that very thing?”

A Man Called Otto will be released in cinemas on January 6, 2023.
