First look at Meg Ryan's acting comeback in new rom-com
What Happens Later, the new film starring Meg Ryan and David Duchovny, has released its first trailer.
The rom-com has been written and directed by Ryan, marking her first appearance on the big screen since 2015’s Ithaca, with the actor returning to the genre that made her a household name.
The film follows two ex-lovers as they reunite after becoming stranded overnight in an airport. As they begin to take a wander down memory lane, they discuss what could have been and what may happen in the future.
Ryan, best known for her roles in When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle, recently spoke about her latest film in an interview conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike, saying What Happens Later was “romantic and sexy.”
“Sometimes there's a question of: Will they be together? Will they not be together?” teased Ryan (via Entertainment Weekly). “For that reason, [What Happens Later] sort of evolves the rom-com genre just a little bit. It's also about old people, and it's still romantic and sexy.
“It has a relationship to movies from the 1940s, like Bringing Up Baby, in terms of the banter, the rhythm of things and a lot of that era of filmmaking. Nora Ephron used to say rom-coms were really a secretly incredible delivery system to comment on the times, and we do that in this movie,” she continued.
“My character is a magical thinker and David's character is a catastrophic thinker. These rom-coms really work when the two characters are somehow opposites and yet have a rhythm of intellect, humour, dialogue and banter that sort of indicates their compatibility.
“It's been really fun to see David embrace this guy, who I don't think is anything really like [him]. To see him dive into every single scene in the fullest way - he's funny, he's smart, he's dear and irresistible,” she added.
What Happens Later will be released in the US on October 13; there is currently no UK release date.
