First look at Gavin & Stacey Christmas special in 'secret' clip released by BBC

The final episode of Gavin & Stacey will be broadcast on BBC One on Christmas Day, but for fans who can’t wait that long, the BBC have released a clip that they have hidden on BBC iPlayer. Viewers who are catching up with the previous Christmas special, broadcast in 2019, are treated to a sneak peek from the new episode at the end, featuring favourite character Nessa (Ruth Jones) showing some tourists the highlights of Barry Island.

It seems that Nessa’s latest financial enterprise is pedalling a tuk tuk around Barry, and charging unsuspecting visitors a premium for it. In the scene, she pulls up along the seafront and asks the elderly couple she is transporting to disembark, asking for a fee of £75. “We’ve only been on a couple of minutes,” the sweet customer objects, to which Nessa replies: “Love, I am just speaking my truth, I find your abusive tone very triggering. You’re damaging my mental health. Now if I was you I would leave it there.”

“You got Apple Pay? I’ve got bluetooth in my bra,” she adds.

Gavin & Stacey: The Finale, picks up the story of beloved characters Nessa and Smithy, Gavin and Stacey, Bryn, Pam and Mick and Gwen five years after the 2019 episode. That Christmas special ended on a cliffhanger, with Nessa getting down on one knee and asking Smithy (James Corden) to marry her, with viewers never hearing his answer.

A lot has happened in those five years but the group of friends and family are all reuniting for Christmas, with Bryn (Rob Brydon) getting ready to pack up his Citroen Picasso for the drive from Barry to Billericay in Essex, where Mick (Larry Lamb) and Pam (Alison Steadman) are hosting the festivities.

Ruth Jones, who created the show with co-star James Corden, was thrilled to be writing a final episode, 17 years after the first series was broadcast. Speaking ahead of the finale, she said: “I feel terribly proud of how long it’s lasted and how people who weren’t even born when it came out are now fans. That means such a lot.”

“It’s been a very special time in my life and it’s spanned seventeen years. The lovely friends I’ve made from it and the happy times we’ve had filming are such a joy. I feel very lucky to have been part of it.”

James agreed, adding: “It’s such a privilege to be able to end a show on your own terms, like it’s not lost on us how fortunate we are to be able to do that.”

“Gavin & Stacey is just a huge part of my life, it changed my life in every way. The thing it means to me most, is my friendship with Ruth. To have an idea with a friend in a hotel in Leeds 20 years ago and then be sat here today with what it’s become… if you think about it too much you could really just start crying all the time. I love her so much and I’m so proud of what we’ve done.”

The final episode airs on BBC One at 9pm on Christmas Day, and is followed by a documentary about the making of it, Gavin & Stacey: A Fond Farewell, at 7pm on New Year’s Day
