First look at Barbie star Marisa Abela as Amy Winehouse in biopic
The first image of Marisa Abela in upcoming Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black is here.
Set to be directed and executive produced by Sam Taylor-Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey, Nowhere Boy) Back to Black will focus on the early years of Winehouse's career, following her life in London and rise to fame.
Speaking about the project in an official statement, Taylor-Johnson revealed she was "excited and humbled" to be able to tell the late singer's story. "I feel excited and humbled to have this opportunity to realise Amy’s beautifully unique and tragic story to cinema accompanied by the most important part of her legacy – her music," she said.
"I am fully aware of the responsibility, with my writing collaborator – Matt Greenhalgh – I will create a movie that we will all love and cherish forever. Just like we do Amy."
Industry star Abela was announced as the iconic singer after producers were said to be looking for a fresh-faced newcomer to take on the leading role (via Variety). Alison Owen (Me Before You) and Debra Hayward (Bridget Jones's Baby) are handling producing duties.
"Amy Winehouse is the greatest musical talent of the 21st century so far," Owen said.
"But like so many female icons, the tragedy of her death has seemed to obscure the triumph of her talent… the fun of the noughties, the craziness of Camden, her youth and brilliance – we want to reclaim that for her with this film."
Winehouse's family are said to be fully onboard with the project, adding: "We are thrilled that STUDIOCANAL, Focus Features and Monumental are making this movie celebrating our daughter Amy’s extraordinary music legacy and showcasing her talent in the way that it deserves."
Back to Black does not have a release schedule yet. Barbie will be released in cinemas on July 21, 2023.
