Welsh fans of House of the Dragon will need to keep an eye out to spot their favourite stars, as filming for Season 3 of the hit Game of Thrones spinoff is reportedly due to begin in March. With production expected to last several months, the new season is unlikely to air before mid-2026 or later, according to reports.

This means viewers will face a wait of more than two years between seasons. However, with the promise of more high-stakes battles, lots of drama, and dragon-fuelled action, the wait should be well worth it.

Shooting is scheduled to run from March to October 2025, with much of the delay coming from the extensive CGI and visual effects work required to bring the dragons and large-scale battles to life, according to 9metres.com. Given the reputation the series has built up for top-tier production quality, HBO is ensuring that every detail is perfected before release. The region’s rugged mountains, dramatic coastline, and historic castles provide the perfect dramatic scenery for the series which brings us back nearly 200 years to the time in Westerosi history when House Targaryen was at the height of its power.

Yes. Several scenes were shot in and around Wales during filming for the first and second seasons of House of the Dragon. Executive producer Kevin de la Noy said of filming in Wales: “It was great to be shooting in Wales with its stunning scenery and landscapes that bring to life our Westeros.

“I had no hesitation in taking House of the Dragon there, as we knew the support from government and the local populous would help us achieve remarkable footage, and we were blessed with the most glorious weather too. Thank you, Wales!”

Dawn Boden, former Deputy Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism in the Welsh Government, previously added: “This is a real demonstration of the strength of north Wales as a region, and I’m delighted we were able to support such a high-end, big budget production. Not only has it boosted the economy locally during the shoot itself, but it has huge potential to bring future tourism to Wales.”

Previously used locations include Trefor Quarry, located right by the sea and the mountains where remnants of the old works were transformed into a fortress, believed to be Dragonstone Castle, the seat of House Targaryen. Coastal scenes were also shot near 12th century Penmon Priory, Anglesey, where parts of the beach below were closed to the public and heavily armed cavalry soldiers were filmed riding across fields, You can read more about some of the locations which already featured in the popular series here.
