After Fight with Family, Woman Leaves Party — and Takes the Entire Cake with Her
"It was the thing I decided I earned," the woman writes of the cake
A woman on Reddit says that after her family downplayed her exciting news, she decided to take home a cake meant to share and enjoy it by herself.
In a post shared to Reddit, the 27-year-old woman writes that she recently celebrated one year of sobriety — something she describes as a "huge accomplishment," even more so than finishing college.
So, when she was at a recent family gathering, she told everyone that she "had something to celebrate."

"They went with 'Ohh, that’s what you were talking about,' and 'Has it been a year already?' " she writes, adding, "I am embarrassed to admit I hoped someone would say they’re proud of me."
At that moment, her brother-in-law and sister made their own announcement: their daughter got into a special gymnastics program. At that news, the rest of the family began to toast, opening bottles of wine and passing them around the table.
When her sister noticed she looked downcast, the woman told her that she had "bulldozed" her own happy news, she writes, to which their mom responded that she had done "the bare minimum" and that hitting a year sober "wasn’t an accomplishment it was just what I needed to do, like graduating high school."
"I tried to make it through to dinner but found myself just not in the mood anymore. I decided to go home," she writes.
But when she did, she took one thing with her: the small berry Chantilly cake she had brought to share with her family after dinner.
"It was the thing I decided I earned. The kids had definitely seen it. On my way out I decided to take it home with me," she adds. "I guess when they realized the cake wasn’t in the garage fridge anymore, my sister called to ask me why I took it. I said I did because it was MY cake to celebrate MY accomplishment."

She writes that her sister then said, “Are you f---ing serious? Oh my god Emma, GROW UP. You are such a f---ing baby.”
"My Mom later texted me directly to tell me how disappointed she was that I threw a tantrum because my niece got more attention than me," she adds.
She ends her post with a question to the rest of Reddit: Was she in the wrong for taking home the cake? "Was that really childish of me, considering the kids saw it and then didn’t get any?"
Reddit commenters say it wasn't, with one writing, "They had wine, which naturally excluded you, right after you told them your good news. I am glad you took the cake!"
Added another: "Your family minimized something that is incredibly difficult and life-changing. Taking the cake with you wasn’t childish, it was a self preservation move after they invalidated your feelings. You don’t owe them your celebration when they couldn’t even acknowledge it."
