Felicity Jones has revealed that she had her teeth capped to play iconic American figure Ruth Bader Ginsburg for her new film On the Basis of Sex.

The 35-year-old actress said she felt self-conscious about her "distinctly British" teeth before taking on the part, telling Graham Norton on his TV chat show: "I kept looking at Ruth and she had the most perfectly formed American teeth, and then I would look at mine, which are distinctly British and a little bit gnarly, so I had my pointy ones capped while I was shooting.

"It sounds painful but it wasn't too bad."

The legal biopic follows the life and early cases of Supreme Court Justice Bader Ginsburg, who faced adversity and a number of obstacles in her fight for equal rights. When she takes on a groundbreaking tax case with her husband, attorney Martin Ginsburg, she knows it could change the direction of her career and the way the courts view gender discrimination.

On playing such a celebrated and pioneering figure, Jones added: "She is so beloved that really the only person that could play Ruth Bader Ginsburg is Ruth Bader Ginsburg so I definitely had a lot to live up to."

Bader Ginsburg became the second woman to ascend to the US Supreme Court in 1993, and has fought tirelessly to protect the marginalised with her rulings, speaking up for women, minorities and the LGBTQ community.

Armie Hammer plays Bader Ginsburg's husband Martin, and joked that playing such a brilliant and respected character cast a shadow on his own marriage.

"It's a high standard to live up to, and now that my wife has seen the film, every so often if I fail to live up to his standards she casually looks at me and says, 'Marty wouldn't do that'", he said.

On the Basis of Sex is showing in cinemas now.
