Inside a $10 Million Malibu Beach House That Feels Like You’re Floating on the Ocean
Though he passed away almost two years ago at age 83, noted Southern California architect David Lawrence Gray left behind a vaunted legacy that lives on through his vast body of work. Touted in The Architects Newspaper as having “enriched the urban fabric of Los Angeles,” the award-winning designer and developer purchased, restored, and adaptively reused several landmark structures—among them, William Pereira’s Metropolitan Water District headquarters (now The Elysian), Flatiron Park’s Tomahawk and Great Republic Life Insurance buildings, The Orpheum Theatre, and Leland Bryant’s Art-Deco Sunset Tower in West Hollywood.
Gray also created numerous residences throughout the coastal town of Malibu, including a pair of beachfront and hillside homes he shared with his wife Karen, as well as this modern oceanfront abode that just popped up for sale atop Las Flores Beach at a dash under $10 million. The listing is held by Sandro Dazzan of The Agency.

Initially built in the late 1970s as a bachelor pad and last sold nearly four decades ago for a mere $142,000, the modern digs were remodeled by current owners and prolific art collectors Tony and Cindy Canzoneri in collaboration with designer Richard Kaléh. Subsequently featured in Architectural Digest, the three-story stucco and glass structure features three bedrooms and four baths in a little more than 3,000 square feet of loft-like living space boasting streamlined white and beige interiors filled with ramps, catwalks, and bridges, plus glassy porcelain floors mimicking the color of the sea.
A particularly special aspect of the architect’s plan included a rear facade that’s been designed to fully maximize views of the entire Santa Monica Bay. “David Gray did an incredible job citing the house at an angle so every room in the house looks down the coast line,” says Dazzan. “It’s so rare that a beach house gets a coastline view like this house. Typically every beach house just looks straight out.”
Among the other highlights is a gallery-like entrance hallway, which flows to a chic living room spotlighted by a Thassos marble fireplace and glass sliders leading out onto a spacious wood deck boasting a duo of fire pits. An Italian Boffi kitchen has an eat-in island, sleekly integrated Miele appliances, and access to an al fresco dining patio, while the inviting primary suite hosts a private balcony, bespoke Poliform closets, and a luxe bath sporting a built-in soaking tub.
In addition to a rooftop deck and an attached three-car garage, the grounds also come complete with a relaxing spa retreat, a shower, and stairs leading directly to the sand.
