A drama series all about the rise and subsequent problems of tech company Facebook has reportedly cast The Crown's Claire Foy as Sheryl Sandberg, with more casting to be announced soon. The series, titled Doomsday Machine, is based on a dramatic exposé by two award-winning New York Times writers and will explore the story of the tech giant in recent years, from its impact on elections, the fake news problem and much more. Here's everything we know about Doomsday Machine.

Who has been cast in Doomsday Machine?

As of yet we have very little casting news. However both Deadline and Variety report that The Crown star Claire Foy has been cast to play company Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, with the role of Zuckerberg to be announced sometime in the future.

What's Doomsday Machine going to be about?

Beginning around the time of the 2016 US presidential election which saw Donald Trump elected to power, the series will explore Facebook's part in that result, along with its impact of fake news and misinformation. The series will also look into more result headlines, such as the recent revelations by The Wall Street Journal that company CEO Mark Zuckerberg attempted to promote positive stories about the networking site and that VIP users are able to avoid platform rules.

The series is based on the 2021 book by award-winning New York Times journalists Sheera Frenkel and Cecilia Kang, titled An Ugly Truth: Inside Facebook's Battle for Domination, which explores in detail the problems at the highest levels of the company.

When is Doomsday Machine being released?

We don't have a good idea of release date at this stage, we're only at casting rumours! But we'll definitely be getting a date in the diary as soon as we know.
