What do you think makes a bathroom a sanctuary?

It should be an escape from the ordinary and the sensible. I like to turn the concept of a functional bathroom on its head and transform it into a living space – a place to unwind and relax.

How can you create a space people want to linger in?

We like to find the protagonist, which could be an area or object, within a bathroom that takes centre-stage. When we designed the Wow!House bathroom we decided that would be the bathtub – the rest of the room unfolded once we chose its key positioning. It’s a trick we like to use to ensure there is always an immediate ‘wow’ moment when someone enters a room.

Bathrooms can be very sterile environments with most being entirely tiled (an extremely practical, but also harsh choice), so by introducing soft furnishings, furniture and statement lighting you can reflect the qualities of softer areas of the home, inviting people to stay longer – perhaps to bathe instead of having a quick shower.

Do you think space is the ultimate luxury when it comes to the bathroom?

Not necessarily. Using considered, natural and organic materials that are not only functional but beautiful can go a long way. Organic shapes will make bathrooms feel cosier and more luxurious, while in small spaces we always create room to include nature – whether that’s areas for planting or a considered space for flower arrangements. Luxury is not just about the visual design of a space, but how it stimulates the senses. Think about scents and tactile finishes.

Is bigger always better when it comes to the bathtub?

If the space allows it, absolutely! A bigger bathtub makes the perfect protagonist in a bathroom, but choosing one should always be about comfort and how you feel in it – that’s the most important thing, whether you want it as a focus for romantic nights in or personal time to float away with your thoughts. If you’ve limited space, you can still make a statement with your choice of taps and the backdrop to your tub.

How can tiles be used to transform a room spatially, as well as decoratively?

We included different-sized tiles in the same colour and design in our Wow!House bathroom to subtly create distinctive areas – the smaller the tile, the more intimate the space. It’s a playful technique that can be used within compact bathrooms too, indicating areas to wash, bathe and relax.

What are the materials and colours that you think best evoke sanctuary style?

Soft colours inspired by nature that add to that sense of grounding. Organic hues can be the perfect backdrop for bolder statement pieces, such as linen, lighting, furniture and art. Never forget art! It adds life and character and makes a bathroom more personable. Plus, if you’re aiming to create a sanctuary, it encourages those all-important moments of reflection. michaelisboyd.com
