It's one of the nation's favourite craft TV shows – and Landscape Artist of the Year is back, and this time the challenges set for the painters are even more complex, and breathtaking, than ever.

Stephen Mangan will return as the presenter of the art competition, which sees budding landscape artists paint the most breathtaking locations across the country.

The first episode of the ninth series of the show will air on Wednesday 10 January on Sky Arts, Freeview Channel 36 and NOW streaming service.

Where can I watch Landscape Artist of the Year?

Actor Stephen Mangan will return to present the ninth series of the painting show, with the first episode airing on Sky Arts, Freeview Channel 36 and NOW on Wednesday 10 January at 8pm.

He also presents sister show Portrait Artist of the Year, which sees talented portrait artists from across the UK battle it out to be crowned winner.

What happens in Landscape Artist of the Year?

The eight-episode series follows a similar format to previous series, with five heats, a semi-final, a final and a prize commission.

The challenges are no easy feat – the competitors have to create a beautiful piece of art capturing the scene in just four hours using their preferred medium, including acrylic and watercolour, in each of the five heats.

Where is Landscape Artist of the Year filmed?

The show travels around the country – in each episode, the painters will be asked to capture some of the most iconic and breathtaking views from across the nation.

In the heats of this series, the artists will paint the cliff-top grounds of Dunnottar Castle , Hever Castle and Hever Lake.

The contestants will also travel to Liverpool, where they will be tasked with painting the bustling Albert Docks and Liverpool's Three Graces, the highlights of the city's skyline.

In the semi-final, they will paint Buckler's Hard in the New Forest in Hampshire, and in the final they will be challenged to paint London's Covent Garden at night.

Who judges Landscape Artist of the Year?

The efforts of the contestants are judged by a trio of artistic extraordinaires: award winning portrait artist Tai Shan Schierenberg, curator Kathleen Soriano and art historian Kate Bryan.

There are also 50 wildcard entrants who compete in each heat, made up of amateur and professional artists alike. Each week, the judges will chose a wildcard winner, with one of the winners being put forward to compete in the semi-final.

What is the prize in Landscape Artist of the Year?

This winner will receive a £10,000 commission from the Science Museum in London to create an artwork inspired by Orkney, spotlighting the islands’ place at the forefront of pioneering sustainable energy. .

Landscape Artist of the Year is on Sky Arts, Freeview Channel 36, and streaming service NOW every Wednesday from 10 January at 8pm.
