Sara Bareilles and her fiancé, Joe Tippett, started off as coworkers before their relationship eventually blossomed into a romance. Waitress, which Bareilles wrote the music and lyrics for, brought her and her future husband together nearly 10 years ago. The performers have quite the sweet love story, so ahead is everything to know about Tippett and his relationship with Bareilles.
Tippett is a successful actor.
Along with Waitress, Tippett has also been on TV screens, most recently starring in the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. He also played Hal Jackson in The Morning Show alongside Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston.
Tippett and Bareilles met while working together on Waitress.
Bareilles’ and Tippett’s love story begins in 2015, when they met at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts while working together in the early days of Waitress. Tippett was cast as the main man, Earl Hunterson.
Eventually, in 2021, Bareilles had a run as the show’s leading lady, Jenna Hunterson, and Tippett revived his role of Earl, playing her on-stage husband. They also played the Huntersons in the 2023 movie musical.
Bareilles and Tippett announced their relationship in 2017.
The actors first made their debut as a couple in March at the opening night of All the Fine Boys, where they posed for photos with Nat and Alex Wolff.
From there, they attended a few events together, like the premiere of Battle of the Sexes.
In June 2018, they attended their biggest red carpet together yet: the Tony Awards.
Bareilles and Tippett got engaged in 2023.
Bareilles announced her engagement to Tippett on New Year’s Day. She posted a selfie to her Instagram of them smiling and gazing into each other’s eyes. Bareilles rested her chin in her left land, putting her unique gold feather ring on display.
“Yes to marrying this man,” she wrote in the caption. “It’s an easy, earned, relaxed YES. @joetipps you are exactly who I want. The more I know you the more I know I love you...and you have introduced me to parts of myself I was afraid to love. And now I love ME more because of you. So really this is all about me. Just kidding. What a gift you are. Let the games begin. Onward into absolutely everything with you. ❤️.”
Tippett also made his own post, sharing a picture of Bareilles and writing, “I’m going to marry this woman. Looking ahead to all of the tomorrows, all the adventures, the laughs, and all of the love. Thank you my heart.”
“We had been talking about it for quite some time, so it wasn’t a surprise or anything. But we were in Mexico City, and she was having a bad day,” Tippett told People of the engagement. “We kind of connected and got things back on track. We had been looking for the perfect ring and couldn’t find it. And I was like, ‘I just want to do it!’ So we found this cheap little ring in a market that we both love, and we were like, ‘That’s the thing for now!’”
“We were up on a roof at sunset, the sky was on fire and we were listening to music and slow dancing, and it was like, ‘OK, now!’ I asked and she said yes and I was like, ‘Well fuck, I forgot the ring, I have to go down and get it!’ So then I came back up, got down on one knee, we did the deal and it was great,” he added.
“I love it. It’s just—it’s sweet,” Bareilles chimed in.
Tippett and Bareilles have a dog.
In early 2022, Bareilles shared the news of their four-legged-friend, Louie, with her Instagram followers. He makes frequent appearances on both of their social media accounts.
