Everything you need to know about King & Conqueror on the BBC
There's nothing we love more than a new period drama on the BBC, particularly when it has an all-star cast featuring the likes of James Norton, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Clémence Poésy.
So, you can bet we're excited for the release of King & Conqueror – a new eight-part historical drama centred on the epic clash between Harold of Wessex and William the Conqueror in the run-up to the Battle of Hastings in 1066 – coming to our screens in 2025.

King & Conqueror: First look images
The BBC released the first images for King & Conqueror on 6 December, showing the leads, James Norton (Harold, Earl of Wessex) and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (William, Duke of Normandy), as well as Clémence Poésy (Matilda) and Emily Beecham (Edith Swan-neck), in character for the first time.
We can see battles raging and tensions running high in the evocative images, and already can't wait to see the drama unfold...
King & Conqueror: Plot
Set in the 11th Century, King & Conqueror is about the epic battle between two historical figures – Harold of Wessex and William of Normandy.
The BBC description reads: "King & Conqueror is the story of a clash that defined the future of a country – and a continent – for a thousand years, the roots of which stretch back decades and extend out through a pair of interconnected family dynasties, struggling for power across two countries and a raging sea.
"Harold of Wessex and William of Normandy were two men destined to meet at the Battle of Hastings in 1066; two allies with no design on the British throne, who found themselves forced by circumstance and personal obsession into a war for possession of its crown."
King & Conqueror: Cast
The King & Conqueror cast is nothing short of impressive with Happy Valley's James Norton (Harold, Earl of Wessex) and Game of Thrones' Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (William, Duke of Normandy) starring as the leads. French actress Clémence Poésy (In Bruges) stars as Matilda while The Pursuit of Love's Emily Beecham plays Edith Swan-neck.
The cast also includes many more familiar faces, including Eddie Marsan as King Edward and Juliet Stevenson as Lady Emma.
King & Conqueror: Release date
The BBC has yet to reveal the exact release date for King & Conqueror, but we do know that it will be landing on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in 2025. We'll keep you updated as soon as we find out more.
