Gabriel might not be returning for Emily in Paris Season 5
We're heading back to France – or should that be Rome? – with our favourite American-turned-Parisian because Emily in Paris has been confirmed to return for a fifth season.
Netflix officially announced on 16 September that the ultimate light-relief drama will be back to satisfy our TV binge cravings, with creator Darren Star telling Tudum, 'We’re excited to return for a fifth [series] to continue Emily’s adventures in Rome and Paris!'
So, dust off those berets and baguettes because from the cast to a rumoured release date, here's everything we know about Emily in Paris season five so far...
Emily in Paris season 5: Cast
The series wouldn't be what it is without Lily Collins, and she will be returning to portray Emily Cooper. In an announcement video, she said, 'There's no place like Rome!' as she teased the next season.
We can also expect Eugenio Franceschini to return as Emily's new Italian love interest, Marcello. Plus, we don't think we've seen the last of Mindy (Ashley Park) and Gabriel (Lucas Bravo). Or have we? Because despite season four's cliffhanger, Gabriel fans have heard some troubling news that Lucas might not be on board for season five after all.
In a recent candid interview with IndieWire, the actor revealed that while he is grateful to Emily in Paris for what it has done for his career, he has been struggling with Gabriel's character arc since season one. 'It kind of became not fun for me to shoot or to see a character I love so much and brought me so much, being slowly turned into guacamole,' he said, adding that he is 'questioning' whether to return for season five after his contract came to an end.
'I really want to see if Gabriel gets back to his fun, cheeky, playful, alive self,' he continued. 'Because three seasons playing melancholic, sad, depressed, and lost is not fun anymore. It’s a comedy, everybody is having fun around me, everybody is jumping around, and I’m just slowly sinking into god knows what.' No pressure then, scriptwriters...
Emily in Paris season 5: Plot
The cast and crew have already teased what's next in store for Emily, with creator Darren telling Tudum, 'Emily’s going to have a presence in Rome. It doesn’t mean she’s not going to be in Paris, but she’s going to have a presence in Rome.'
As for Lily Collins, she teased the future of Emily and Marcello's relationship during an appearance on Good Morning America. 'Marcello is a whole other adventure that we want for Emily because we ultimately want Emily to be able to have a better work/life balance,' she said.
'We want to have Emily be able to smile without condition. We want to see her beyond her vacay mode. And he comes at that perfect time. I feel like they have a real spark and a real connection and a real romantic connection. A lot of that’s going to continue to play out next season.'
