Everything we know about The Day of The Jackal season 2
If you were as gripped as we were by Eddie Redmayne's nail-biting thriller, The Day of the Jackal, which reached its dramatic conclusion shortly before Christmas, then you'll already be on the edge of your seat, waiting for news on season two.
This article contains spoilers for The Day of the Jackal season one
The Oscar-winning actor stars in the Sky Atlantic show as the world's best sniper, "an unrivalled and highly elusive lone assassin" who calls himself The Jackal and makes his living carrying out hits for the highest fee.
But in season one of the 10-part show, he meets his match in tenacious British intelligence officer Bianca (Lashana Lynch), who doggedly determines to track him down in a thrilling cat-and-mouse chase across Europe.
By now, you either know how this ends or are yet to watch the fast-paced final episode (or, indeed, the entire show, in which case we're envious that you still have it to come!). So, let's skip straight to everything we know so far about The Day of the Jackal season two, which has already been confirmed by Sky.
The Day of the Jackal season 2: Release date
We're yet to receive news on when The Day of the Jackal season two might land, but after season one became the most popular new series ever to launch on Sky, it's definitely coming, so watch this space. We'll update you as soon as we know more, but as filming is yet to get underway, we aren't expecting new episodes until at least 2026. This means it's also far too early for a teaser clip, let alone a trailer – sorry!
The Day of the Jackal season 2: Cast
Look away now if you don't want to read any spoilers, because we can't discuss the possible season two cast without revealing who is and isn't still alive. Consider yourself duly warned for the last time!
Unlike in both Frederick Forsyth's 1971 book of the same name and the 1973 film adaptation that followed it, The Jackal survives – a huge twist for any viewers who knew how the original plots ended.
We're therefore assuming that Eddie Redmayne will reprise his lead role for season two, especially as he told The Hollywood Reporter that he knew there was "an aspiration for the Jackal story to continue" when he first signed on the dotted line. "I knew that was going to be the twist," he said, describing how he found reading the script "propulsive and compelling" and loved his "enigmatic" character. However, as with the rest of the cast, nothing has been confirmed just yet.
Bianca, meanwhile, became The Jackal's final victim of season one after the pair's final, tense run-in at his stunning Spanish home. So, presumably, there will be a new MI6 agent on his back for season two – and they've got big boots to fill.
Úrsula Corberó, who plays The Jackal's runaway wife, Nuria, will almost certainly return as a key character, as will Charles Dance as financier Timothy Winthrop and Eleanor Matsuura as businesswoman Zina Jansone.
The Day of the Jackal season 2: Plot
While we wait for an official season two synopsis, we can take a guess at where things might be headed based on the ending of season one.
The Jackal was seen making his escape after killing Bianca, desperately ringing his wife, Nuria. He is heard passionately vowing to track her down after she stashed away a bundle of his hitman earnings and left the family home with their adorable young son, Carlito, after (understandably!) becoming concerned for their safety. When season two ended, Nuria was unaware that her brother, Alvaro, had been killed in the crossfire when MI6 raided the couple's villa. Somehow, we don't think this tragic news is going to help The Jackal's cause when it comes to salvaging their relationship...
Zina, meanwhile, met up with The Jackal on a bench in Budapest. There, she put forward the idea of making her employer Timothy his next target, after Charles Dance's character failed to pay the £100 million he had promised the assassin for taking out tech bro Ulle Dag Charles, and then tried to kill him. Given Timothy had also arranged for liason Zina to be killed, we're looking forward to her and The Jackal becoming closer allies in season two.
So, two key likely plot lines for season two, then: The Jackal's search for his family, and his determination to take out Timothy as revenge for his disrespect. We reckon this could make the next series even more all-consuming and emotionally interesting than the first, as we watch The Jackal try to reconcile two seemingly irreconcilable strands of his life. Plus, there are all those dodgy dealings within MI6 that somebody needs to expose. Can't wait!
The Day of the Jackal season 2: Trailer
We'll have to wait a while yet for a trailer, given filming on season two is yet to begin, but we're already excited for our first look at the action when it does drop.
Will there be a The Day of The Jackal season 3?
There's no word yet on whether The Day of the Jackal season three is in the pipeline, but executive producer Gareth Neame (Spooks, Downton Abbey) told The Hollywood Reporter that he wants to keep it going just long enough for fans to "root for it and want it to come back, without it being something that outstays its welcome and loses its edge". So, while a season three is a possibility, a season four is unlikely.
