Even Kim Kardashian is shocked she won a fashion award

Kim Kardashian just won a fashion award, and even she is shocked.

On Monday night, during the annual CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) awards, Kim Kardashian West made history by accepting the organisation’s first-ever Influencer Award.

Taking to the stage in at the Brooklyn Museum in New York in a cream crop top and maxi skirt by Rick Owens, the reality TV star joked that she wasn’t sure she was worthy of the recognition thanks to the fact she hardly ever wears clothes.

“I’m kind of shocked I’m winning a fashion award when I’m naked most of the time,” she quipped. “But this is seriously such an honour,” she continued, “so thank you to the CFDA for this award.”

Joined at the ceremony by her sisters Kourtney Kardashian and Kendall Jenner, Kim also went on to reflect how far she has come within the fashion industry, particularly as she hasn’t always felt welcome.

“It was maybe seven years ago when I had a publicist and she asked what I—what were my goals, what were my dreams, and I said I just want to be on the cover of a fashion magazine, and she said to me, ‘Let’s get some realistic goals ’cause that’ll never happen.'”

Of course, in true Kim K form, she had a comeback.

“And so of course I sent her my Vogue cover when it came out, an autographed copy, but so it’s really a trip to me that now I’m up here getting an award for fashion when it’s something that I’ve always loved so thank you so much for this. It means a lot.”

Despite her self-deprecating acceptance speech, some fashion insiders still weren’t sure the reality TV star was deserving of the fashion industry’s official stamp of approval.

Fashion publicist Kelly Cutrone told NY Post she was surprised about the award. “I’ve never woken up in the morning and wondered, ‘What is Kim Kardashian doing today, and how is that going to affect my industry?’ ” she said.

It was a feeling echoed on Twitter.

“I have very mixed feelings about Kim Kardashian receiving an award at the CFDA awards tomorrow night,” one user tweeted. “Personally, I don’t feel that she’s brought anything positive to the industry or to the world’s perception of American Fashion. But as an influencer, she’s clearly the epitome…”

“I can’t believe we live in a society where the CFDA made an award specifically for Kim Kardashian…,” added another.

“Vogue is giving out their first ever influencer award to Kim Kardashian for “changing the fashion industry.” Why though when people like Rihanna exist?” another user tweeted.

But Tommy Hilfiger, the designer behind the first-time award, claims Kardashian West’s influence on the fashion industry is impossible to ignore, despite the fact she doesn’t have her own label.

“Kim is the most important and powerful influencer in the world. Her reach extends far beyond her own brands,” Hilfiger said in a statement.

“Every time she wears, posts or talks about a fashion brand, there is an immediate and significant increase in both awareness and sales.”

We guess her 112 million followers on Insta are proof of just that.
