Escape to the Country fans say 'read the room' as Steps star explores million pound homes

BBC's Escape to the Country left several viewers unmoved as they begged the broadcaster to "read the room".

During Monday's celebrity special (December 30), presenter Denise Nurse was back in the driving seat as she assisted Steps singer Ian 'H' Watkins and his partner Tom with their potential move to Wales.

Showcasing four opulent properties in the stunning South Wales region, Denise guided H and Tom as she displayed what their futures could look like if they were to make the big move to the Welsh countryside. But despite the grand properties that were on offer, viewers were left unsettled by the four homes, which all had a million-pound price tag attached to them.

Heading straight to the social media site X, fans shared their grievances over the high-offer properties.

Another said: "Having celebs on this programme brings nothing to the party, apart from having to pay an appearance fee."

A third upset viewer also penned: "I just love watching c**p singers looking for their new 2 million pound home."

A fourth added: "Who on earth thought it would be a good idea during tough economic times to come up with a program where H from Steps looks at £1.5 million properties?! Snobbery and elitism at its finest!"

While another fan shared: "These Christmas #escapetothecountry episodes somehow leave a bad taste."

However, some fans were happy to see H make the big move to Wales. One viewer wrote: "It’s the best place to live! We love it!"

At the end of the programme, Denise sat down with H and Tom to find out what they thought of the search and whether they were considering making an offer on any of the houses.

But H explained that there was still plenty to think about before he could put his money on the table. He said: "I love that we've seen lots of ideas that we can recreate, I loved your mystery house. There is a lot to think about!"
