Emmys 2023: WWD Style Awards

The Hollywood awards season red carpet pileup continued Monday night in Los Angeles with the rescheduled 2023 Emmys. Even though the event had a smaller cast of stars (just TV) than others this season, it was still big on fashion, with award winners Ali Wong, Ayo Edebiri, Jeremy Allen White, Jennifer Coolidge and more showing up in style.

The black-and-white and metallic color trends that have dominated awards season fashion thus far continued on Monday night, with red dresses (Sarah Snook in Vivienne Westwood), vintage looks (Claire Danes resplendent in 1990 Balmain), sheer (Selena Gomez in Oscar de la Renta), florals (Ali Wong in Louis Vuitton) and fringe (Issa Rae in Pamela Roland, Jessica Chastain in neon green Gucci) taking center stage.

For men, creative black tie continued to reign, with Reece Feldman in a scarfy Saint Laurent tuxedo and Oliver Peoples sunglasses among the night’s hits.

In addition to deep-pocketed luxury labels Louis Vuitton. Dior, Valentino, Armani and Chanel, smaller brands also shined, including New York-based Oscar de la Renta, Todd Snyder and Bode, along with some newer-to-the-carpet names such as Jonathan Anderson’s Loewe and Francesco Risso’s Marni.

Diamonds were still front and center, and men’s lapel flair was on full display (Colman Domingo’s pearl brooch), with smaller jewelry brands like Revza and Rainbow K making an impression with edgy ear cuffs (as seen on Rachel Brosnahan), alongside mega pieces by Tiffany & Co. (Gomez’s collar), Cartier (Snook’s diamond and emerald suite) and Chopard (host Anthony Anderson’s flower brooch).

The show celebrated 75 years of the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences, which brought old friends Carol Burnett, Christina Applegate, Rob Reiner, Lorraine Bracco, Calista Flockhart, Joan Collins and more onto the stage to pay tribute to classic TV shows, and made for lots more glam appearances.

Here are WWD’s (rescheduled) 2023 Emmys Style Awards:

BEST NEWCOMER:

Simona Tabasco in Marni
Simona Tabasco in Marni

On a night when florals were trending, “The White Lotus” actress Simone Tabasco’s Marni dress was a marvel. The structured fit ‘n’ flare style composed of colorful cutouts brought out the DIY crafter in all of us.

BEST BEAUTY

Natasha Lyonne
Natasha Lyonne

Natasha Lyonne’s natural body waves (tended to by Vernon Francois), and retro futuristic glam (fluttery Kiss lash extensions, metallic shadow and pale pink lips by makeup artist Jo Baker and her Bakeup Beauty line), were the ideal match to the mood of her slinky silver Schiaparelli gown.

BEST MENSWEAR

Donald Glover
Donald Glover

Donald Glover took the season’s creative black tie impulse to new heights with a lush embroidered velvet smoking jacket and pants by Emily Adams Bode that felt Old World and quirky-modern at the same time.

BEST JEWELRY

Sarah Snook
Sarah Snook

The classically luxe Cartier high jewelry suite Sarah Snook wore with her regal red Vivienne Westwood ballgown was worthy of her “Succession” character Shiv Roy herself, with an 18-karat white gold, diamond and emerald earrings.

BEST SHOES

Aubrey Plaza in Loewe
Aubrey Plaza in Loewe

Aubrey Plaza’s Alexandre Birman gold Pepita 120 platforms took her modern, butter yellow dress from runway to a red carpet glam direction. And kudos to Loewe for being behind the evening’s most viral fashion moment with the spring 2023 gown with a pinned bib front that meme-crafters are having fun using as a Post-it note for all kinds of messages.

MOST DARING

Suki Waterhouse in Valentino
Suki Waterhouse in Valentino

Continuing the story of pregnancy chic as seen on Rihanna, Suki Waterhouse had her spring 2023 red Valentino haute couture gown adjusted to fit — and flaunt — her pregnant belly.

BEST DRESSED

Claire Danes
Claire Danes

Styled by Petra Flannery, Claire Danes has been a red carpet pro since she burst onto the scene in the ’90s. Her vintage 1990 pink Balmain dress with a stunning draped and jeweled back was a reminder of that, and a nod to Gen Z’s love of all things ’90s and all things vintage. The gown was designed by Hervé Pierre, who worked for Balmain at the time, and who has more recently styled former First Lady Melania Trump.

ICON AWARD

Joan Collins
Joan Collins

Joan Collins was as uber-glam haute ’80s as you’d expect in her crystal fringe va-va-voom gown by Jenny Packham. To a certain generation of style lovers, she’ll always been Alexis Carrington on “Dynasty” and we love her for it.
