Elizabeth Hurley brings back the body-con 'going out-out' dress
Fashion trends come and go, but by nature, the industry is cyclical – so we're rarely surprised when something once proclaimed 'officially out' comes right back around again with a vengeance some time later. It happened with the skinny jeans, crop tops, pedal pushers, UGGs and ballet pumps that we thought had been left firmly behind in the early 2000s, and now even the once-reviled Western aesthetic is back in full force thanks in large part to Taylor Swift and Beyoncé.
One returning trend we didn't see coming, however, was the bodycon going 'out-out' dress that for many was a mainstay of their teens and Twenties. Which is why we found ourselves wondering if we'd been served some kind of a throwback pic when we spotted Elizabeth Hurley out on the town in a bandage-style metallic midi...
The 58-year-old actress was every bit the glamazon as she stepped out on Tuesday evening (this week, not 20 years ago!) in New York City wearing a skintight silver ribbed midi-dress featuring a plunging neckline held together by metal hoops. She completed the look with matching silver platform heels, and added a nod to the Mob Wife aesthetic in the form of an oversized black faux fur coat.
It can't just be us who think that Liz's look is seriously reminiscent of the going 'out-out' 'fits of yore... For who could possibly forget those Hervé Leger bandage dresses that every mainstream celebrity and socialite worth their style salt wore ad nauseam in the early 2000s?
All that's left to work out now is whether this counts as an official battle-cry for the bodycon party dress' full-blown return, or if it can be written off as a mere blip in the fashion time-space continuum. That's for you to decide...
