It's a cruel paradox that good sleep, which should come naturally to us, is something that eludes so many. We’re routinely searching the web for quick fixes, spritzing pillow sprays and sipping Tik-Tok-approved supplement cocktails in the quest for a good night’s kip. And it's no surprise — according to Mental Health UK, almost one in five people in the UK aren’t getting enough sleep.
That's why we're more than a little excited that the makers of our favourite temperature control sleep tech have launched two new products to not only tell you about the quality of your shut eye, but actually improve it too.
The Eight Sleep Pod 4 and Pod 4 Ultra build on the success of the Pod 3 mattress cover — known for innovative temperature regulation and in-depth sleep reporting — for a 360-degree approach to what’s arguably the most important aspect of our wellbeing: those precious eight hours.
What is the Eight Sleep Pod?
Described as the ‘world’s first sleep fitness company,’ Eight Sleep first launched smart sleep technology in 2015 and have been solving the too hot/too cold dilemma facing sleeping partners since then.
Each pod mattress cover houses a network of water tubes that can be heated or cooled independently for each side of the bed — genius. The tech is all powered by the 'Pod' itself — a power unit akin to an old-school computer monitor that plugs into the mattress cover. The covers fit any bed (just slot them on like a fitted sheet) and include clever features like vibration and thermal alarms, snoring detection and biometric feedback.
But the new models — the Pod 4 and Pod 4 Ultra — take things to the next level, coming loaded with a host of new extras to supercharge your sleep.
Eight Sleep Pod 4: What's new?
As well as the dual climate control, automatic temperature, snoring detection, vibration/thermal alarm and sleep and health reports that come as standard for the Pod 3, the Eight Sleep Pod 4 boasts new innovations designed to help you master sleep as well as get a more rounded view of your overall wellbeing — because sleep is about so much more than just rest, people!
New features on the Pod 4 include:
'Clinical grade' sleep and health tracking - 99% accurate heart rate, sleep stages, HRV (heart rate variability), snoring and respiratory rate.
Improved comfort - The cover is thinner so you can fully enjoy your mattress underneath.
2x more cooling power - Super sweaty sleeper? You're in luck, this has double the cooling power of the Pod 3.
Quieter performance - The hub performs at just 30dB decibels; 40% quieter than the Pod 3.
Phone-free control - Control via tapping zones on each side of the Pod (mattress).

Eight Sleep Pod 4 Ultra: How is it different to the Pod 4?
The Eight Sleep Pod 4 Ultra combines the features of the Pod 4 alongside some seriously swanky upgrades — mainly thanks to the inclusion of a base section that slots underneath your mattress. We're talking:
Adjustable adjustable body positions - Set up your ideal head and foot elevations for before and during sleep.
Sleeping custom elevation - An expertly designed sleeping position designed to evenly distribute pressure, reducing back pain and improving circulation
Reading custom elevation - Say goodbye to constantly re-stacking saggy pillows. The reading elevation setting raises the head area by 30 degrees and slightly elevates the feet for
Relaxing custom elevation - A slight head and foot elevation for those chilled Sunday mornings.
Elevation control - Adjust the above phone-free, via the Pod, or on the Eight Sleep app.
Snoring mitigation - As well as detecting snoring, the Pod 4 Ultra can automatically raise your head while sleeping, which has been clinically proven to decrease snoring by up to 45%.
The new adjustable base is three inches tall and is designed to fit between your current bed frame and mattress. It's compatible with slatted and platform bed frames, but if you want some extra stability you have the option to purchase a leg kit for £89 extra.
While we're big fans of this new feature, there is one slight drawback in that the dual control offered with the temperature setting doesn't extend to the adjustable base — naturally, because it's designed to work with your existing mattress which, for most people, doesn't split in half.
