Mohamed Salah was on the end of some roughhouse tactics as Egypt booked their spot in the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations by beating Sudan 1-0.

Mohamed Abdelmonem scored the only goal with a header from a corner to ensure Egypt qualified for the knockout stage in second place in Group D behind Nigeria.

But Liverpool star Salah was fortunate to come through the game unscathed after some robust challenges from Sudan players.

Salah was lucky to avoid injury in the second half after a studs-up, high challenge from Mazin Mohamedein.

But he and Egypt are through to play to play winner of Group E - the wide-open group of Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea and holders Algeria – in the last 16 next Wednesday.

Egypt were not at their best and go through with 1-0 wins against Guinea-Bissau and Sudan.

But, while it was not a convincing display against Sudan, they made the breakthrough on 35 minutes when Abdelmonem headed home unmarked as Egypt got the job done.

20:37 , Giuseppe Muro

75 mins: Into the final 15 minutes now. Egypt are looking comfortable

20:31 , Giuseppe Muro

70 mins: Egypt are in full control of this game here. Sudan need to throw more bodies forward and that will leave space for Egypt to exploit at the back.

20:30 , Giuseppe Muro

There has been a goal in the other game in this group. Nigeria have taken the lead against Guinea-Bissau.

So as things stand, Nigeria and Egypt are going through in first and second place.

20:25 , Giuseppe Muro

65 mins: Huge chance for Egypt!

They work it well from a throw in on the left, the ball is crossed to Salah at the back post and he unselfishly tees up Elsolia who skies the ball over the bar from eight yards.

Oh, he should have done so much better there. It should be game over.

20:23 , Giuseppe Muro

63 mins: Another robust challenge from a Sudan player. There is a real edge to this game now.

20:20 , Giuseppe Muro

61 mins: A poor challenge from Mazin on Salah.

There have been a few robust challenges from Sudan now, the referee needs to keep on top of that.

Mazin’s studs were showing there and he is lucky to escape a booking.

20:19 , Giuseppe Muro

He weaves his way past three defenders with quick feet inside the penalty area and his shot is well saved by Sudan goalkeeper Mohamed and Sudan clear.

52 mins: Down the other end, Elsolia has a shot blocked. This is a good contest now.

20:10 , Giuseppe Muro

50 mins: This is much better from Sudan. They have had all the ball in the second half, have been in Egypt’s half and you sense there could be better opportunities if they make better decisions in the final third.

They have got nothing to lose, so they might as well throw everything at this second half.

20:09 , Giuseppe Muro

48 mins: Sudan are enjoying longer spells of possession at the start of the second half. That will give them a bit more confidence.

They forward the ball forward well but a shot goes high over the bar.

20:04 , Giuseppe Muro

46 mins: And we’re back underway for the second half...

20:04 , Giuseppe Muro

A change of goalkeeper for Sudan for the second half.

Mohamed has picked up an injury and Abou Achrine is on in his place.

So far, so good for Egypt

Half-time

40 mins: Another chance for Egypt. Mohamed find space inside the area but he can’t direct his header on target.

Sudan need to be careful here, Egypt are finding space in their backline all of a sudden.

GOAL! Egypt 1-0 Sudan | Mohamed Abdelmonem 35’

19:38 , Giuseppe Muro

Egypt are ahead!

Abdelmonem loses his marker from a corner and his header is too powerful for Sudan goalkeeper Mohamed.

It has been a frustrating night for Egypt but they have their breakthrough.

19:34 , Giuseppe Muro

33 mins: Egypt go close to a breakthrough!

Mohamed rises highest to meet a Salah corner from the right and his powerful header forces the Sudan goalkeeper into a good save down to his right.

19:32 , Giuseppe Muro

This sums up Salah’s night so far...

19:31 , Giuseppe Muro

An update on the other game in Group D.

It is 0-0 between Guinea-Bissau and Nigeria, so as things stand Egypt are going through in second place behind Nigeria.

19:29 , Giuseppe Muro

28 mins: The first sign of a bit of frustration from Salah.

His touch lets him down inside the area, Sudan clear and the Liverpool man complains to the referee about something.

Salah is being surrounded whenever he has the ball. Egypt might need someone else to step up with a bit of quality tonight.

19:28 , Giuseppe Muro

25 mins: Two Sudan players throw their bodies in front of a shot and the ball gets deflected behind for a corner, which is cleared.

More good defending from Sudan.

19:24 , Giuseppe Muro

23 mins: We’ve reached the midway point of the first half and there have been no real clear-cut chances for Egypt. Sudan will be delighted with the way they have started.

Egypt are being patient and will hope their quality will shine through eventually.

19:22 , Giuseppe Muro

21 mins: Salah gets into the penalty area on the right, but he is surrounded by three Sudan defenders and the ball runs out for a goal kick.

19:21 , Giuseppe Muro

20 mins: Egypt are having long periods of possession. They work the ball on the right but Salah is crowded out and Sudan clear.

19:20 , Giuseppe Muro

17 mins: The longer Sudan can hold out, you sense the more they will grow into this game.

They look well-drilled and have frustrated Egypt, but are throwing bodies forward at pace on the counter when they get the chance.

19:17 , Giuseppe Muro

15 mins: Sudan will be delighted they have come through the first 15 minutes without conceding.

They have soaked up the early pressure well. Egypt have just worked the ball well to the left and forced Sudan goalkeeper Mohamed into a save. He spills the initial shot but gathers at the second attempt and Sudan survive.

19:14 , Giuseppe Muro

13 mins: Egypt had 18 shots in their last game against Guinea-Bissau, with only four on target. With the attacking talent they have in their team that is not great.

He usually plays in a defensive role for Arsenal, but playing for his country there is an onus on Elneny to get forward.

19:11 , Giuseppe Muro

10 mins: Egypt have dominated possession in the opening 10 minutes. You sense that will be the pattern of the game.

Sudan know what is at stake for them, though, and look up for this.

19:07 , Giuseppe Muro

4 mins: Another chance. This time Salah crosses a free-kick into the box and Mohamed heads just wide of the far post

19:04 , Giuseppe Muro

3 mins: Down the other end, that’s a very good early chance for Sudan and a bit of a let-off for Egypt.

Sudan break at pace and Hussein creates an opening for himself in the area, but he can’t keep his shot down and it goes harmlessly over.

19:02 , Giuseppe Muro

1 min: A good, positive start from Egypt. The ball falls to Elneny on the edge of the area but he fires high over the bar.

The Arsenal man is not known for his goals, but he should have done better there and at least hit the target.

Here come the players...

Sudan won AFCON in 1970.

Speaking ahead of the game, their forward Mohamed Abdel Rahman said: "We lost against Egypt in the FIFA Arab Cup, but this is a different competition and each match has its own circumstances.

“The Egyptian team is great, and I know all their players.

“This is a special derby for us. In Sudan we have great confidence in ourselves.

“I hope to do our best to win and qualify for the next stage.”

18:51 , Giuseppe Muro

This will be the sixth meeting between Egypt and Sudan at AFCON.

In those matches, Egypt hold a three-match advantage over Sudan. Their first four meetings took place between 1957 and 1970, while their last head-to-head dates back to 2008, with Egypt winning (3-0).

Group D permutations

A reminder of how things stand in Group D...

Nigeria have already qualified after two wins from two. Egypt start the night on three points, and Guinea-Bissau and Sudan have one point.

Mathematically, Egypt, Guinea-Bissau and Sudan all have a strong chance of booking a place in the knockout stage.

A reminder that the top two in each group are guaranteed a spot in the last 16, while four points should be enough to secure progress as one of the best third-placed teams.

Queiroz brushes off criticism

18:39 , Giuseppe Muro

Ahead of tonight’s game, Egypt coach Carlos Queiroz has said he will not be swayed by critics of his underperforming team as target a spot in the knockout stage.

Queiroz has come under fire for his tactics, with Egypt yet to hit their stride and demonstrate they are capable of ending a 12-year wait for another AFCON crown.

"We’re living in a different world (with Covid), a different society, a different football," Queiroz said.

"The only thing that didn’t change is criticisms for ourselves (coaches).

“The coach can’t make a magic situation. We’re doing our best and people on TV or in the media criticise. This is part of the show, we need to be ready for this event."

Asked to explain Egypt’s strategy and positioning of players, Queiroz dryly replied that was not his problem.

"I advise you to hire some experts to read the game and then you will see in which formation we play," he said.

"Football is a game of opinions, of mistakes. I have mine, you guys, you have yours. As far as we respect each other, there’s nothing wrong in the game, everything is correct."

Prediction

17:18 , Giuseppe Muro

Egypt are not known as a free-scoring side, despite having Salah in their ranks, and they have scored just one goal so far this tournament.

They should have too much quality for Sudan though, and book their place in the last 16 without too much fuss.

Egypt to win, 2-0

Early team news

17:02 , Giuseppe Muro

There is no luxury of resting key players for Egypt with their AFCON qualification hopes still in the balance, so expect Salah to once again lead the side.

Trezeguet was benched for the last game, and the Aston Villa man will be pushing for a recall to the starting lineup.

For Sudan, captain Salaheldin Nemer was forced off with injury against Nigeria and may well miss his country’s final group match as a result.
