Edinburgh Zoo Celebrates Birth Of Endangered Pygmy Hippo Calf
Edinburgh Zoo Celebrates Birth Of Endangered Pygmy Hippo Calf. A tiny Endangered pygmy hippo calf has been born at Edinburgh Zoo. The female calf arrived on 30th October to parents Otto and Gloria. Keepers at the wildlife conservation charity have named the new arrival 'Haggis', after the Scottish delicacy. Pygmy hippos are native to the forests and swamps of West Africa, primarily Liberia. The species is classified as Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (ICUN). It is estimated that just 2,500 remain in the wild due to habitat loss.
