You might be well on the way to buying all your Easter eggs, and be in the throws of planning a string of beautiful decorative touches to celebrate the long weekend with too – but what about an Easter tree?

The tradition in Germany to decorate the branches of trees and bushes with eggs for Easter is centuries old, but it has become popular in the UK in recent years.

Whether you place your Easter tree in the window or use it as a centrepiece for your Easter lunch on Sunday 31 March, we think it's a cute way of getting into the spring-time holiday spirit.

How to make an Easter tree

  1. If you're searching for activities to do with the children, then you could go out on a hunt to collect some branches. Otherwise, you could pick up a small bare branch tree from your local garden centre.

  2. If using bare branches; trim them down and leave them natural or paint them white.

  3. Place bare branches in a medium to large vase.

  4. Add sand, pebbles, or vase filler to fill in spaces around branches.

Now the fun bit, decorating the tree – and you'll be pleased to know it's much easier than the Christmas tree version.

Simply glue or stick string loops to the tops of any lightweight Easter eggs or egg decorations you want to hang adorning the branches. You could even decorate your own egg shells to give it an extra personal touch.

If you're looking to create a slightly chicer focal point then use shop-bought ornaments with a monochrome colour theme or gather together blossom stems and use lots of tastefully decorated Easter eggs to hold them in place in a vase.
