With Easter fast approaching (taking place on Sunday 20th April 2025 this year), you might have already spotted – or indulged in – some chocolate eggs. But there are lots of other lovely ways to mark the special occasion.

From putting together a spring wreath or planning a fun quiz, there are plenty of great Easter activities to get the whole family involved with. And one of our favourites, of recent years, has to be making an Easter bonnet.

Originating from the European traditions of wearing flowers on a hat to celebrate spring, an Easter bonnet can be a lovely way to get your creativity flowing and is a fun way to get little ones excited for the festival

While bonnets are worn during the famous Easter Parade in New York City, many schools in the UK also participate in the tradition too.

Whether you choose to go down the spring flowers route or adorn yours with artificial eggs, chicks and bunny rabbits, you can really go all out.

How to make an Easter bonnet

If you've been wondering how to make an Easter bonnet, we've put together a list of everything you might need, as well as a few ideas to get you started. Why not take some time out this weekend to get creative and make your children (or yourself) some fun Easter bonnets to wear over the holiday. Take a look at what you can do below...

You will need:

  • A straw hat

  • Tissue paper

  • Paint

  • Paintbrush

  • Colourful cardboard

  • Accessories (artificial Easter eggs, flowers, chicks, rabbits)

  • Glue (0r a glue gun)

  • Scissors

  • Ribbon

1. Firstly, you will need to create the base of your bonnet to decorate. Start by covering your straw hat with colourful tissue paper (you'll need glue for this) or paint it in bright colours as a base for your decorations. Alternatively, if you don't have a straw hat, you can make your own out of colourful cardboard.

2. Now it's time to decide how you want to decorate your Easter bonnet. Lay all your accessories out on a table and choose which you want to place on your hat first.

3. Let the decorating begin! Taking your accessories, stick them onto your hat so they firmly stay in place. We recommend yellow chicks, Easter eggs, sprigs of flowers, and feathers for a final finishing touch. Leave to dry for a few hours and then add a ribbon around the front. You'll have a wonderful hat in no time!
