EastEnders fans believe they've cracked why soap queen Chrissie Watts is making a return.

Viewers will remember the feisty Chrissie from 2004 until 2005, as the wife of Dirty Den (Leslie Grantham). Becoming a smash hit with audiences, she graced our screens for 218 episodes as the Queen Vic's landlady and launched into numerous storylines.

Fast forward to 2015, Chrissie was last seen leaving Walford in handcuffs for Den's murder, however, after a 19-year hiatus, the iconic character will be striding back into town later this year for a brief spell. Yet, the question on everyone's lips: what's sparked her return?

Fans suspect that foe Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) has something to do with it, reports the Daily Star.

Chrissie took centre stage in one of "the programme's biggest and most high-profile narratives" when she killed her husband, aka Sharon's father, Den in self-defence at the climax of the special 20th-anniversary episode. The fateful night saw a powerful alliance formed between Chrissie, Sam Mitchell and Zoe Slater against cunning Den, ending in his brutal death.

This shocking twist enthralled a staggering 14.34 million viewers - "almost 60% of possible viewers" were glued to their screens watching Chrissie end Den's life.

EastEnders enthusiasts are abuzz with speculation that Chrissie Watts might return to Albert Square for a dramatic showdown with Sharon Watts over The Six saga. This storyline, which has gripped viewers, involves Sharon and other Walford women concealing the murder of her betrothed Keanu Taylor (played by Danny Walters) during the festive season.

Soap watchers are now voicing their theories on X, previously known as Twitter, with one fan predicting: "I am predicting a storyline between Sharon and Chrissie and something to do with #TheSix storyline? " They draw parallels between past events, noting, "After all, they are both so similar after the deaths of Den and Keanu were very similar."

Another is convinced that Chrissie will be the catalyst for exposing The Six, tweeting: "I reckon Chrissie will be the one to expose the six and take revenge on Sharon! " Meanwhile, another viewer suggests there's an intriguing connection: "There certainly seems to be some story overlap."

One particularly imaginative theory from a fan suggests a twist where Chrissie and Sharon reconcile: "My cruel theory is her and Sharon will eventually see eye to eye and makeup. I also think she's going to have some involvement in the Six storyline with knowing about what happened to Keanu, which could be deadly I fear."
