East Texas Women: Catherine Cureton makes quilting accessible
RUSK COUNTY, Texas (KETK) – KETK News is highlighting the ladies making big moves from the Piney Woods. This week, we will take you to Rusk County to meet a woman who empowers her community to keep the tradition of quilting alive.

Meet Catherine Cureton of Henderson, the owner of Running Doe Quilts.
“We don’t sell quilts at all,” Cureton said. “We sell fabric and then we do the longarm quilting for people. Another big thing for us is that we’re the first place in East Texas that you can actually come and rent one of the longarms for the day and finish your own quilt.”
Cureton started making quilts as a hobby but overtime she learned to turn it into a career with over a decade of experience quilting.
“I really want to bring sort of a hub for quilters, so we’re going to have classes. I also want to make sure kids know how to sew, it amazes me how many people my age don’t even know how to thread a needle,” Cureton said.
While Cureton loves fabric and sewing, her favorite part about quilting is the community.
“The quilt shop is kind of like a therapy session going over here,” Cureton said. “Picking out fabrics, doing something that makes you happy, but also getting to visit with other women.”
East Texas Women: Jeweler Ferrell Fisher helps others shine
The quilts of Running Doe Quilts are used to make a difference in Cureton’s community.
“One of the quilts we’re quilting today actually is a charity quilt. So we are quilting quilts for the Quilters Guild of East Texas that I belong to. So they call them cuddle quilts. And they donate them to a lot of groups around town. Children’s Advocacy Center gets a lot of them,” Cureton said.
Cureton uses her skills to put passion into her patchwork.
