The Duke and Duchess of Sussex sent Princess Charlotte a sweet message as she celebrated her fourth birthday yesterday.

Prince Harry and Meghan tend to steer away from royal traditions, and their message was no different. The royal pair used their Instagram page to leave a comment on a Kensington Palace birthday post, writing, 'Happy Birthday Charlotte! Lots of love, H&M xo,' complete with balloon and cake emojis.

Royal fans were quick to point out how their message could be interpreted as informal, as the couple didn’t address Charlotte as Princess, whereas the other social media accounts run by the staff of the Queen, the Duke of York and Prince Charles all referred to the birthday girl by her official title.

This isn’t the first time they’ve done this, as Harry and Meghan wrote a similar message to mark Louis’ first birthday last month, where they didn’t use his royal title of ‘Prince’ either.

To mark the special occasion, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge released three new photos of Charlotte that were taken by Kate herself at the family’s homes at Kensington Palace and Anmer Hall in Norfolk.

The portraits show Charlotte sat smiling on the grass dressed in a floral dress with a Peter Pan collar, collecting flowers and sat on top of a fence, smiling.

Charlotte, whose full title is Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana of Cambridge, was born at 8:34am on 2 May 2015 at St Mary’s Hospital in London, just like her brothers.

She is fourth in line to the throne after Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince George.

Charlotte shares a spring time birthday with Baby Sussex, her cousin, who is due to be born at any day. The royal baby is the first child of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and is expected imminently, with a due date simply given of 'spring'.
